Sankt Agnes is the Catholic church in Magdeburg's Neue Neustadt district . The church, which is a listed building , is the seat of the parish of St. Johannes Bosco , and belongs to the Magdeburg deanery of the Magdeburg diocese .

history

In 1230 the new town at the gates of the old town of Magdeburg received town charter . In the same year, the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Albrecht von Käfernburg, founded the Cistercian convent "ad sanctum Agnetem" . The monastery church was elevated to a parish church in 1245.

During the Schmalkaldic War , the monastery was destroyed and a battery was built on the ruins, with which the city of Magdeburg was shelled. The monastery was rebuilt after the peace agreement.

A few days before the destruction of Magdeburg, the citizens of Magdeburg destroyed the Catholic monastery. Again the monastery was rebuilt after the war.

In 1812, parts of the Neustadt were demolished by the French in favor of the new fortifications. The Agnetenkloster also fell victim to this. Agnetenstrasse still reminds of the location of the monastery today.

It was not until June 26, 1861 that the foundation stone of today's St. Agnes Church was laid in the newly built Magdeburg Neustadt , and the east-facing church was consecrated on November 10 of the same year . The patronage was taken over by the Agnetenkloster, and the architecture of the church with its roof turret is reminiscent of a Cistercian monastery church. In 1890 the parish of St. Agnes was established .

On August 5, 1944, the church was hit by an incendiary bomb and burned down. After the Second World War , the parish continued to expand due to the influx of Catholic refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . The church was rebuilt by 1949, in 1952 the Holy Spirit Chapel was built in Barleben and in 1953 the Rosary Chapel in Rothensee.

On March 1, 2006 the association of municipalities Magdeburg-Nord was established, to which the parish of St. Agnes belonged from then on. On November 25, 2007 a new organ was consecrated in the church , it was built by the Mecklenburg Organ Builders and has 23 sounding registers and 1,300 pipes . On November 28, 2010, today's parish of St. Johannes Bosco was founded from the community , which includes the St. Agnes Church in Magdeburg as well as the St. Joseph Church , the St. Mechthild Church and the Rosary Chapel in Rothensee as well as the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle in Barleben belong.
