General

Kreuzberg has had its own chapel since at least the 17th century . At that time the place belonged to the parish Wildenburg . In the 19th century, the residents of Kreuzberg tried in vain to get a parish elevation . In 1950, the Kreuzberg Catholics applied to the diocese of Aachen again to be elevated to a parish, which was successful. On March 25, 1953, Kreuzberg finally became an independent parish. The Wildenburg parish became part of the Kreuzberg parish and has been a parish vicarie ever since .

Building history

In the 17th century a small hall church was built in Baroque style, of which the choir is still preserved today. In 1925 this church was extended to the west and a new bell tower was built. The church was damaged in the Second World War . The damage caused could be repaired by 1956. Since the church had become too small, an expansion was decided in the early 1960s. The plans were provided by the Simmerath architect Peter Heinen . The nave was torn down and a new, much wider nave made of quarry stone and concrete was built between the choir and the bell tower in 1965. The consecration took place on March 13, 1966.

Building description

St. Antonius is a single-aisled hall church made of quarry stone. The east-facing baroque choir from the 17th century is single-bay and closed on three sides. The nave is modern and has a gable roof. The retracted bell tower from 1925 is three-story, plastered and has an eight-sided tower spire.

Furnishing

Of the furnishings, a protective mantle Madonna, the pulpit and the stained glass windows in the choir are worth mentioning. Two of the four choir windows are works by Hermann Gottfried from 1963 and represent St. Barbara of Nicomedia and St. Aloisius von Gonzaga . The other two windows represent St. Anthony the Hermit and St. Hubertus von Lüttich and were probably created by Franz Melchior in the 1920s. The organ is a work by the organ builder Weimbs from Hellenthal in 1959. The instrument has an electro-pneumatic action and 10 registers distributed over two manuals and a pedal .
