history

The ancient quarry of the Spitzelofen marble on the upper Steinberg points to Roman settlement, it was part of a Roman estate near the present-day village of Allersdorf.

The Stein Castle east of today's St. Georgen, first mentioned in 1214, was probably built by Salzburg followers and formed the administrative center of today's municipality. In the 13th century, when it was owned by the Lords of Pettau , it had a castle keep (lower court district). The church of St. Georg unter Stein or am Steinberg, which was first mentioned in 1184 and named for the place and today's community, was probably initially an own church of the castle lords, but was attached to the nearby St. Paul Abbey in 1245 and has been a parish church since 1246.

In 1864 the municipality of St. Georgen in Lavanttal was founded from the municipalities of Steinberg, Herzogberg and Paierdorf. During the structural reform of the Carinthian community, it was incorporated into Sankt Paul im Lavanttal on January 1, 1973 . A St. Georgen association was founded in order to remain culturally independent. In 1990, a referendum led to the regaining of independence, and Karl Markut became the new mayor.

Population development

The decrease in the number of inhabitants since 2001 is mainly due to a negative migration balance .

coat of arms

In the coat of arms of Sankt Georgen, the pewter cut lower half stands in silver for the Stein Castle as a historical local rulership, the dragon pierced by a lance is the attribute of the parish and community patron St. Georg . The branches with an apple and a pear growing outward in the upper half of the shield stand for the importance of fruit growing and must production in the municipality.

The official blazon of the coat of arms reads: A shield divided by red and silver raised in a pewter cut, topped with a pinned, color-confused lance, from the shaft of the cut two arched, leafy branches, the front one with an apple, the rear one with one Pear grow in the upper field, and in the lower field pierced a green dragon with a red tongue of flame and red weapons.

The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on July 6, 1993. The flag is red-green with an incorporated coat of arms.
