history

At the site of today's Johanneskirche, a church building with a surrounding cemetery is proven as early as 788 . Today's church is a late Gothic successor to this church from the second half of the 15th century, which was donated by Neumarkt citizens in 1454 . Remnants of the wall from previous buildings were included in its construction. This can be seen in particular from the tower substructure protruding into the west yoke and the choir, which is slightly shifted from the central axis . Until 1691, St. Johannes Baptist was able to maintain its independence from the nearby St. Veit Monastery , before it was incorporated into it. Until secularization , St. Johannes Baptist was the parish church of Neumarkt, before the former monastery church was declared a parish church.

Remodeling work on the church tower by the Neumarkt master builder Sylvester Mayrhofer is documented for the year 1725. The tower probably got its onion dome . At around the same time, large parts of the church furnishings were also redesigned in Baroque style . About 150 years later, between 1873 and 1881, the regotization took place . The onion dome of the tower was replaced by the pointed helmet that characterizes the townscape of Neumarkt-Sankt Veit. In addition, the baroque church furnishings were largely replaced by neo-Gothic pieces. A mosaic in the floor at the entrance to the sacristy commemorates the completion of the renovation work in 1881.

description

Late Gothic fresco of the Adoration by the Magi (around 1430/40)

The neo-Gothic high altar of the Church of St. Johannes Baptist dates from 1873. It is decorated with numerous pinnacles and shows in the main picture a representation of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by the church patron Johannes. Two altar leaves have survived from the previous baroque altars, showing Saints Johannes Nepomuk and Antonius Eremita .

There are also some original Gothic pieces of equipment in the church: a glass painting of St. Martin from around 1490, which was let into the window to the right of the high altar in 1972, as well as a tapestry - like fresco above the sacristy door, on which the adoration by the The Three Wise Men are depicted in front of a rich landscape background. This fresco belongs to the so-called "soft style" and shows parallels to the South Tyrolean and northern Italian painting of the Quattrocento . It is therefore assumed that the painting was created by a traveling painter around 1430/40 .

Bells

The 38 meter high tower of the Church of St. John the Baptist houses a four-part bell. The larger bells were cast by Johann Hahn in Landshut in 1950. The smallest bell, probably the death bell , dates from 1724 and was made by the Munich bell caster Johann Matthias Langenegger.
