The Church of St. Josef is a Roman Catholic parish church in Baden-Baden . It is located at Lichtentaler Straße 90a and is responsible for the city center of Baden-Baden. Together with six other churches, it belongs to the Baden-Baden pastoral care unit .

history

In the 1920s it became apparent that the Liebfrauen collegiate church could no longer accommodate the Catholics living in the center of Baden-Baden. In 1925, a building site for a new church was purchased at Bertholdstrasse 1 , but it could not be built in the 1930s for political reasons. In 1936 a church building fund was set up that collected money for the building of the church until 1948. Since the area on Bertholdstrasse no longer seemed suitable, on November 23, 1956, a 6300 m 2 area was acquired from the site of the Palais Biron on Lichtentaler Strasse. In order to be able to build a church, the Falkenbach had to be relocated to the eastern corridor border. A new footpath was also planned along this border, which will connect to Maria-Viktoria-Straße and over the chain bridge to Lichtentaler Allee.

In 1957 a competition was held among architects with experience in building Catholic churches. Nine projects were shortlisted. The authority of the Archdiocese of Freiburg spoke out in favor of a modern round church , while the Baden-Baden Foundation Council wanted a more traditional longitudinal building . In July 1958 the city of Baden-Baden, the total of Trustees and the Archdiocese of Freiburg in the design of the architect Hugo Becker agreed Mainz , previously the parish church of the Annunciation in Lampertheim had built their special lighting and the idea of a free-standing bell tower in the planning of the Church of St. Joseph. Hugo Becker was commissioned to build the church together with the Baden-Baden architect Albert Peter.

On April 30, 1959, the Baden-Baden Building Regulations Office issued the building permit. The groundbreaking soon followed and the foundation stone was laid on October 18, 1959 . The Baden-Baden poet Werner Bergengruen wrote the text for the certificate and Sister Maria Bernarda Schuler from the Lichtental Cistercian Abbey put the certificate on parchment.

The church was built in the years 1959–1961. The new parish consisted of 4791 members from the parish of the collegiate church and 1392 from the parish of St. Bonifatius in Lichtental . On May 1, 1961, the members of the parish of the collegiate church were released, whereupon a procession led to the newly built church. The first mass and the blessing of the new building took place there. On July 1, 1961, the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Karl Gnädinger . In 1963 the tower received its four-part bell, which was consecrated on July 26, 1963. In 1987 the facade of the church was renovated. In 1995 the Church of St. Josef was added to the list of cultural monuments in Baden-Württemberg due to its artistic quality and its architectural significance.

Building description

Steeple and exterior

At the end of Lichtentaler Straße is the church of St. Josef halfway between the collegiate church of Our Lady of Baden-Baden and the parish church of St. Bonifatius in Lichtental. The free-standing, 40 meter high church tower refers to the transverse oval nave, which is set back from the street . The bell cage hides a four-part chime that was made in the Heidelberg bell foundry in 1963.

Striving pillars support the flattened dome of the central building , the walls of which are made up of closely set V-shaped pillars, with glass concrete blocks in between, allowing daylight into the interior of the church. The ground plan of the building measures 29 by 35 meters, with a trapezoid each connecting to the north and south sides . The northern porch consists of the entrance area including the baptistery , the southern porch offers space for the sacristy and the lower-lying community and youth room . The rectory is south of the church .

The entrance to the church measures 18 meters and contains four double-gate portals that are covered with copper . On the gates there are bas-reliefs by Hayno Focken . On the right of the two middle portals a prayer to the church patron St. Joseph can be read: Saint Joseph, let us wander through life without guilt, let it be secured in your protection. The door handles show Christian symbols: dove, olive branch, vine, fish, hand of God . Through the portals, the visitor arrives in the anteroom including the baptistery.

Interior and artistic equipment

The baptistery, which is kept dark, has a dome through which daylight is guided onto the baptismal font via round, white glass blocks. The entering church visitor is reminded by the baptismal font of his own baptism , which has accepted him into the church community. The black slate floor contrasts with the white, circularly arranged white marble slabs that surround the font. The marble basin of the baptismal font has an embossed surface. The copper lid shows Christian symbols (water and fish). The handle of the lid is made of a fully sculptured dove, which refers to the Holy Spirit .

The church has 600 seats, making it the largest of the seven churches of the Baden-Baden pastoral care unit. The broad oval hall is formed by the vertically placed concrete pillars, which support the domed roof with the flat ceiling. The ceiling is provided with a wooden wickerwork. The daylight is directed into the interior of the church through the glass concrete windows. Günther Schmid from Baiersbronn designed the glass windows, which are held in red tones on the east side and dark blue dominates on the west side.

Three steps lead from the church room to the altar , in the four stages, the white dais form, on which the white altar rises which consists of a marble monolith is carved. In the altar there are the relics of St. Lactantius, Abdon and Sennen, all three martyrs from early Christian times. A triumphal cross by Emil Sutor from Offenburg hovers above the altar . Christ is shown as the victor over death, showing the viewer his wounds. In the choir wall is the tabernacle , on the doors of which the Lamb of God and the symbols of the evangelists are depicted. The tabernacle was designed by Hayno Fockens. On the left side of the chancel there is a Mother of God by Emil Sutor. She carries the Christ child who looks at the viewer. To the right of the chancel is the Joseph column, which was created by Hermann and Friedrich Pohl. The five plates of the column show scenes from the life of the church patron: from bottom to top the Joseph's dream can be seen (Mt 1, 18-25), above it the commission to bring Mary and the baby Jesus to Egypt (Mat 2, 13-15 ). The third panel shows how Joseph is commissioned in a dream to return to Israel with Mary and the baby Jesus, the fourth panel promises Joseph to accept Nazareth as his home (Mt 2, 19-23). The top panel shows the 12-year-old Jesus teaching in the temple (Mt 2, 41–52).

It is an instrument made by GF Steinmeyer & Co. , which was created as Opus 2254. The organ has 26 registers , which are distributed as follows: Hauptwerk 10 registers, Schwellwerk 9 registers and Pedal 7 registers.
