St. Marien is the name of a parish and the associated parish church in Saarwellingen in the Saarland . The parish extends over the districts of Reisbach and Obersalbach and belongs to the diocese of Trier .

Parish and parish church have been under the patronage of Mariae Sacrifice since the consecration of today's church . The former patroness St Barbara is listed as a secondary patroness.

Parish

The parish has its origins in the district rice hamlet of only 1,937 from the two varieties of rice Weiler and Labach village formed Reisbach .

A parish church for Reisweiler is mentioned for the first time in a deed of donation from the Fraulautern monastery from 1237. It is likely to have originated in the transition from the twelfth to the thirteenth century and was the mother church for the towns of Reisweiler, Labach, Obersalbach, Falscheid , Hoxberg and Eidenborn as well as for the Labacher Hof. While Falscheid, Hoxberg and Eidenborn, as branches or curators, now belong to the neighboring parish of Lebach , Obersalbach is still a branch of the parish of St. Marien.

The parish has formed a pastoral care unit with the neighboring parish of St. Bartholomew since 1994 and is part of the Saarwellingen parish community formed on September 1, 2011.

Parish church

The population growth in the course of industrialization in the 19th century made it necessary to build a larger church. After initial plans, which were destroyed by the Franco-Prussian War , in 1881 district architect Carl Friedrich Müller was commissioned to plan a new church in the neo-Gothic style . After the demolition of the old church which was on May 18, 1885 foundation laid, and took place after two years of construction on 27 May 1887, the consecration by the Trier bishop Michael Felix Korum . This makes the Marienkirche the oldest church in the municipality of Saarwellingen.

In 1919 the church was equipped with electric lights and in 1934 a heating system was installed .

Damage to the church caused by mining activities required renovation between 1995 and 1999 . The foundation of the church building was secured by computer-controlled hydraulics . The hydraulics ensure that every movement of the earth is absorbed and the church moves with it, so that damage is no longer to be expected. As part of the renovation work, under the direction of architect H. Hemann, renovations were carried out in the chancel and a glass wall was installed under the gallery , creating an additional room. Dipl.-Ing. Markus Schmitt and designer Herbert Holzer ( Deutsche Steinkohle AG ) are responsible. During this time, the services took place in an emergency church built in 1995/96 , which today serves as a parish center.

The St. Marienkirche in Reisbach is a three-aisled hall church built in the neo-Gothic style . The nave , divided into a central nave and two slightly lower aisles , is divided into four bays . Since the central nave rises a little higher than the side aisles, the church building can also be referred to as a relay hall or a stepped hall . The ships are grouped under a common gable roof . A five-sided choir with a polygonal finish is attached to the nave . The ceilings of the three naves are formed by ribbed vaults. The upper part of the church tower is octagonal and has a pointed helmet . A lower, narrow stair tower is attached to the side of the tower .

The church's equipment includes a. the celebration altar and ambo created in 1998/99 by the wood carvers Josef Himbert and Josef Klaus . Wall paintings from the 19th century, which were restored by H. Wurmdobler from 1995 to 1999 , are located above the side altars, which have Gothic-like shapes like the high altar . A Fallen Memorial from 1959 with an artistically designed sandstone relief was given a new location in front of the morgue as part of the restoration work from 1995 to 1999.
