The Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus in Reichling , a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech , is an early classicist church that was built in the 18th century on the site of a choir tower from the 14th century. The church, which is elevated above the village, is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra . It is a protected architectural monument .

history

In 1173 a first pastor is recorded in Reichling. At that time the Bavarian dukes held the patronage right. In 1551 Duke Albrecht V donated the parish to the Augustinian Canons of Bernried am Starnberger See. Today's church was built in 1779/80 according to plans by the Munich master mason Franz Anton Kirchgrabner. The former choir tower was included in the new building and raised by the bell floor.

architecture

Exterior construction

The nave is covered by a gable roof that is hipped to the west , and the choir is covered by a mansard roof. A profiled cornice runs under the roof . The third and fourth yokes are widened like a transept . The outer walls are divided into double rows of windows with arched windows and round windows above. The corner pilasters are painted on. The entrances are located on the north and south sides and are integrated in signs .

The pending Gothic coming time rectangular tower base is divided by Blend fields cut into the round-arched, round and oval windows and the above pointed arch frieze concludes. The square structure, sloping at the corners, is crowned by a Welschen hood .

inner space

The four-bay nave is covered by a transversely oval flat dome. A round choir arch leads over to the retracted, semicircular closed choir . The ceiling of the choir simulates a dome. The western end of the nave is formed by a double gallery resting on pillars with a swinging parapet. The walls are structured by pilasters with Corinthian capitals . A surrounding beam connects the nave and the choir.

Piece

The Wessobrunn stucco in the late Rococo style is colored and partially gilded. The coat of arms of the Bernried provost Benno Proske, the builder of the church, is emblazoned on the choir arch with the year 1780. The apostle candlesticks are provided with the attributes of the apostles.

Ceiling painting

The ceiling paintings are signed and were executed by Sebastian Jaud in 1803. They were painted over in 1882 and exposed again in 1924/25. In the nave, St. Leonhard is shown with a view of Reichling and the portraits of the donors of the church furnishings, which were added around 1800 . In the choir you can see the patron saint of the church, St. Nicholas, who presents the three poor sisters with three golden balls. During the restoration, the saint was exchanged for the figure at the window and incorrectly depicted in the room with the young women.

The ceiling painting above the gallery depicting King David playing the harp and the church fathers in the cartouches on the side were made by Jakob Huwyler (son) in 1924/25 . The belt arches and the vaulted fields above the gallery and in front of the choir are decorated with brocade painting.

Furnishing

pulpit
  • The four-column high altar made of stucco marble, a work from 1793, is attributed to the Wessobrunn plasterer Thomas Schaidhauf . The altar sheet with the signature of Sebastian Jaud depicts Saint Nicholas kneeling in front of a Madonna and Child. On the side passages are the saints of the plague , Saint Sebastian and Saint Rochus of Montpellier .
  • In the arched niches of the marbled side altars are the figures of the Mother of God and the Good Shepherd, set in gold and silver . In the round medallions of the extracts , Mary Magdalene is shown on the left and St. Anthony of Padua with the baby Jesus on the right .
  • The two altars of the transept-like bulges are just as splendid as the high altar. The late Gothic wooden sculptures, the crucifix in the northern altar and the figure of St. Leonhard on the southern altar, date from the early 16th century.
  • The white and gold choir stalls date from 1793 .
  • The white-framed pulpit in the late rococo style is also part of the furnishings from the time the church was built . The pulpit is decorated with gilded putti reliefs, the sound cover is crowned by the tablets of the law.
  • The 14 paintings of the Stations of the Cross were probably painted by Sebastian Jaud and are framed in rococo.
  • The pictures on the gallery parapets and the miraculous multiplication of bread above the door to the sacristy were painted by Jakob Huwyler (son).

Sandstone tombstone

Next to the southern sign, a sandstone tombstone decorated with a relief is embedded in the outer wall. The client was Leonhard II. Hirschauer , who was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Wessobrunn from 1562 to 1571 and who had the tombstone made in memory of his deceased parents.
