The Church of St. Paul is the parish church of the same Catholic parish in the district of Moabit in Berlin district center on the corner Waldenserstraße (main entrance) and Oldenburg Road (eastern nave and parish and community center). It is also a Dominican monastery church . The church building and the parish and parish hall are entered in the list of monuments of the State of Berlin.

history

prehistory

The Church of St. Paul is a successor to a three-aisled chapel of the same name, which was consecrated on August 4, 1869. Previously there had been houses and a boiler shop on the property, from the latter the church building was created under the direction of the master builder Carl Niermann . The residential building for the newly founded Dominican community was occupied on September 29, 1869. The chapel was used for pastoral care in Moabit, while the Dominicans also looked after hospitals and taught in an orphanage.

"Moabit Monastery Tower"

The inauguration of St. Paul in Berlin was accompanied with criticism and resentment. On August 16, 1869, the church was damaged during unrest, the Moabit monastery tower.

Kulturkampf and further development

As a result of the Kulturkampf , the monastery was vacated by the Dominicans on December 1, 1875. The property had previously been sold to a private owner whose tenant took possession of it on that date. However, with the consent of the tenant, the chapel could continue to be used for church purposes. After the end of the Kulturkampf, the re-establishment of a Dominican settlement was approved under certain conditions.

Due to an increase in the Catholic population, the chapel was replaced by a larger church. The foundation stone was laid on June 24, 1892, and the provost Joseph Jahnel , Prince-Bishop's delegate for Brandenburg and Pomerania , consecrated the church on October 24, 1893.

Building description

building

The church, built with reddish brick, is a three-nave hall church in the late Gothic style . It was built by the architect Engelbert Seibertz in the years 1892/1893. To the three Jochen structured nave the laterally projecting to a yoke transept added. The sacristy is built on the west side, above this there is a house chapel and, laterally, the residential building of the Dominican monastery.

The entrance in the main portal was rebuilt on the occasion of an external renovation in 1987 and consists of three doors, the middle of which is designed as a larger main door and lifted out through its own gable. The portal is closed off at the side by two church towers, each 45 meters high. The tops of the two church towers are not adorned with a cross or weathercock, but four gilded flower stems with their blossoms pointing in the four directions of the wind and a vertical flower of the same kind - its age and its creator unknown, this floral decoration probably repeats the one in the gable lily crosses or the coat of arms of the Dominicans visible between the towers and above the main portal .

inner space

In the south-facing choir is the celebration altar , the pulpit and the choir stalls . On the left side of the choir is the neo-Gothic baptismal font, on the right an apostle altar with figures from the 15th century .

The interior of the church has been redesigned in the course of the reconstruction, the previous colored painting of the vaults and walls with ornaments and plant tendrils was dispensed with. The floor tiles of the nave and transept and the holy water basin at the entrance have been preserved.

The wide interior is characterized by the contrast of the high, brick-facing columns, whose services are continued in the ribbed vault , to the white wall surfaces.

Holy door

Holy Door in June 2016

The Holy Year of Mercy , proclaimed by Pope Francis on December 8, 2015 , is celebrated in many dioceses in special commemoration of repentance and pilgrimage , as the Pope wanted this custom not only in Vatican City , but by as many as possible Catholics around the world can be consummated. In the Archdiocese of Berlin was set up for this purpose at the parish church of St. Paul a Holy Door, which could be passed through to early November 2016th

The Holy Door was opened on January 17th, 2016 by Archbishop Heiner Koch . At the opening, Psalm verses 118, 19, and 20 were spoken: “Open the gates to righteousness for me, so that I may come in to give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate to the Lord, only the righteous enter here ”. Passing through the Holy Door should symbolize the willingness of the pilgrims to implement the concerns of the Holy Year and to turn to needy people. The Holy Door was decorated with seven circular reliefs depicting the seven works of mercy . The Holy Door was ceremonially closed on November 6, 2016.

St. Paul as a parish church

After coordinating the interests of various parishes and the monastery, the Dominicans were given parish pastoral care for Moabit on October 1, 1895. In the period that followed, the congregation comprised around 30,000 members. The parish area was divided up, in 1910 the parish of Sankt Laurentius and in 1926 the parish of St. Ansgar separated.

The church serves (as of August 2011) as a parish and monastery church, the monks of the Dominican monastery work as parish priests and in other pastoral tasks, as prison chaplain in the Moabit correctional facility and in other areas of responsibility.
