The St. Walfridus Church is a Catholic parish church in Rilchingen-Hanweiler , a district of the municipality of Kleinblittersdorf , Saarbrücken Regional Association , Saarland . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The Catholics from Rilchingen-Hanweiler belonged to the parish of Wölferdingen near Saargemünd ( Sarreguemines ) in Lorraine / France until 1792 (or 1802) , then to the parish of Auersmacher . From 1862 the place became an independent parish , whereby the patronage of St. Walfridus was taken over by the mother church Wölferdingen. Walfridus was probably a messenger of faith who worked in the Vosges . A small church was used as the parish church, which was built in 1800 on the present cemetery and today houses the St.Welfert Chapel. The surrounding wall and the sacristy are still preserved parts of this church. Due to strong population growth , the church had become too small towards the end of the 19th century, so it was decided to build a new church.

The new building took place between 1884 and 1887 according to plans by the architect Carl Friedrich Müller ( Saarlouis ). The construction company brothers Johann and Karl Karmann (Kleinblittersdorf) were responsible for the execution of the plans. From 1945 to 1952 the church underwent a restoration .

In 1954 there was a major fire in which the roof structure and the bell tower designed as a gable turret were destroyed. The church building was then rebuilt in a modified form without a tower.

From 1961 to 1962 a free-standing tower in the campanile style with an attached arcade was built . The plans for this came from the architect Albert Dietz (Dietz-Grohte architects, Saarbrücken). The last major restoration and conversion work took place from 1971 to 1972.

Furnishing

Inside the church, the top of the high altar from 1934 is worth mentioning, which was created by the workshops for church art Mettler ( St. Wendel ). Furthermore the baroque figure of the Mother of God with the child, the figures of Saint Walfridus and the mother Anna with the baby Jesus.

The lead glass windows in the choir, showing Maria and Anna with the baby Jesus ( Anna-Selbdritt ) on the left and Saints Walfried and Matthias on the right , were designed in 1956 by the glass painter Jakob Schwarzkopf ( Trier ) and made by the Binsfeld (Trier) company.

At the base of the tower there are figures of St. Agnes, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Francis of Assisi . Next to the church portal is a figure of St. Elizabeth of Aragón on the left and a mission cross from 1916 on the right .

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1954 by the company Gebr. Späth ( Mengen ). In 2004 the instrument was restored by Peter Ohlert ( Kirkel ). The organ, which is set up on a gallery , has a free-standing console and has 17  registers , divided into 2 manuals and a pedal . The action is electro-pneumatic.
