The Nieuwediep – Amsterdam railway line , also Staatslijn K , is a railway line between Den Helder and Amsterdam in the Netherlands . It is the main railway line in the northern part of North Holland . It connects the cities of Den Helder, Alkmaar , Castricum , Uitgeest and Zaanstad with Amsterdam. The route length is about 81 kilometers. The place name Nieuwediep was used by Den Helder in 1860 when the connection was built.

history

InterCity trains on sidings at Alkmaar station

The first section of the line, between Den Helder and Alkmaar, was opened on December 18, 1865. On May 1, 1867, the second section between Alkmaar and Uitgeest was inaugurated. On November 1, 1869, the section between Uitgeest and Zaandam followed . The next part of the route wasn't opened until eight years later. For the section between Zaandam and Amsterdam, an elaborate bridge construction had to be built over the North Sea Canal , which prevented this section from opening earlier. In 1983 this bridge was demolished in favor of a new three-track railway tunnel. The electrification with the 1,500 volts DC voltage customary at the time took place on the piece from Amsterdam to Alkmaar in 1931. The section between Alkmaar and Den Helder received electrical overhead lines in 1958 .

The maximum speed on the route is 140 km / h. On the section from Amsterdam to shortly after Alkmaar, however, only speeds up to 130 km / h. The line has three tracks between Amsterdam Centraal and Zaandam . From Zaandam it runs on two tracks to Schagen , from there it only runs on a single track to the terminus in Den Helder.

In Den Helder you can change to the ferries to the island of Texel .
