The State Road 148 (S 148) is a state road in the southern Oberlausitz that of Löbau according ebersbach-neugersdorf extends to the Czech border. The state road is of supra-regional importance, especially for transit traffic to Southeast Europe.

History and course

The road was built in 1828 from Löbau via Neugersdorf to Rumburk as a straight road . In the course of the construction work, a Chaussee house was built near Löbau.

Today the road runs south near Löbau, starting from the intersection with the B 178, via the localities Großschweidnitz , Neucunnersdorf and Kottmarsdorf to Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, where it serves as a bypass. Over its total length of 19 km, it crosses the Großschweidnitzer Wasser , Spree , Leutersdorfer Bach and Kaltbach rivers as well as the Löbau-Zittau railway line .

In Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, the S 148 crosses the German-Czech border, where it continues as Silnice I / 9 (State Road 9) to Prague . Until the Czech Republic joined the Schengen Agreement, it was one of only 3 border crossing points for trucks in Saxony towards the Czech Republic.

Due to its course in the Lusatian highlands as well as changes in the landscape through glaciers and streams, the road has several inclines and depressions, such as the Kottmarsdorfer Berg or the valley of the Großschweidnitzer water.

State of development

The state road from Löbau to Ebersbach-Neugersdorf is consistently passable in two lanes. The 2 + 1 system is used on the Ebersbach-Neugersdorf bypass . Fundamental traffic restructuring in the amount of 5.5 million euros is also planned there in order to guarantee the smooth traffic connection to federal highway 96 .

The state road is a busy road. It is used more often than average by trucks.

Accidents

A noticeable number of accidents occurred on the road, for example in May 2016 when a truck went off the lane, in November 2017 when a truck almost slipped into the Spree when it was slippery, and again when it was slippery, when nine trucks in one A slight curve collided and the road had to be fully blocked.

On other sections such as the "notorious" Kottmarsdorfer Berg with its 9% gradient, there are often long traffic jams and obstructions from trucks in the winter months. The route there is extremely prone to drifting snow and therefore has to be closed often.
