The Complesso natatorio del Foro Italico ( German  swimming complex of the Foro Italico ; before: Stadio Olimpico del Nuoto , German  Olympic swimming stadium ) is a swimming stadium in the Foro Italico sports complex in the Italian capital Rome .

history

Stadium during training during the 1960 Olympic Games

On the occasion of the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, an Olympic swimming stadium was also built in the Foro Italico . This was designed by the architects Enrico Del Debbio and Annibale Vitellozzi . In 1959 the opening took place with an international competition in swimming, water jumping and a water polo tournament. At that time, the stadium consisted of a swimming pool, which could also be used for water polo matches, and a pool for water jumping competitions.

During the 1960 Olympic Games , in addition to the swimming and diving competitions , the water polo tournament and the modern pentathlon swimming competition took place. Before the games, a large scoreboard was installed in the stadium showing the times in swimming and the scores of the judges in diving.

The stadium was refurbished for the first time for the 1983 European Swimming Championships and expanded the following year for the World Swimming Championships . In 2000, another 33 × 25 m pool for water polo games was built on the south side of the stadium. In 2009 the World Swimming Championships were held for the second time in the Complesso natatorio del Foro Italico .
