The Catholic parish church of Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross) and former collegiate church of Notre-Dame (Our Lady) in Bray-sur-Seine , a municipality in the Seine-et-Marne department in the French region of Île-de-France , opens a church building from the second half of the 10th century. In the 12th century the church was partially rebuilt in the Romanesque style. Since 1945, the church, in which valuable pieces of equipment are preserved, has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

history

The first church in Bray, which was part of the diocese of Sens , was destroyed by fire in 978. In its place, a new church was built in the second half of the 10th century, which was partially rebuilt around 1165 and consecrated in 1169 by Wilhelm von Blois (1135–1202), Archbishop of Sens. In 1174, the Count of Champagne Henry the Generous set up a canons' monastery in Bray and the church became a collegiate church under the patronage of Notre-Dame . After the abbey was dissolved during the French Revolution of 1789, it became a parish church and received that of the Holy Cross as its second patronage .

Exterior construction

The bell tower on the west facade, covered with a pointed helmet, is supported by massive buttresses. A round arched portal opens on the ground floor and is crowned by a triangular gable. The bell storey is pierced on all four sides by arched sound arcades to which a clock is attached. A narrow stair tower is added to the left side of the tower. On the north side of the church are chapels in the Renaissance style , in which large, three-lane windows and a portal framed by pilasters are cut.

inner space

The nave has three aisles . The two-storey main nave is vaulted by a broken, wooden barrel that dates back to the 15th century. Round- arched upper clad windows open over the central nave arcades , which also continue in the choir . The round arches of the arcades rest on massive columns, which like the semicircular closed choir, the ambulatory and the two radial chapels date from the 12th century and are among the oldest parts of the church. The top chapel was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. The north aisle with its side chapels in the Renaissance style dates from the 16th century.

Furnishing

Baptismal font
Baptism of Jesus
  • The stone baptismal font is marked with the year 1570. The oval bowl is gadronized and has a relief representation of the baptism of Christ in the Jordan. The Latin inscription is carved on the upper edge of the pool: "NISI QUIS RENATUS FUERIT EX AQUA ET SPIRITU" (Who is not reborn from water and spirit). On the back you can see the coat of arms of Jacob of Savoy-Nemours , whose family held the manor in Bray in the 16th and 17th centuries .
  • Like the carved figure of the Apostle Paul, the wood-carved group of sculptures of the Instruction of Mary is dated to the 16th century.
  • In the ambulatory hangs a no longer completely preserved crucifixion group.
  • Numerous other figures have been preserved in the church, such as a Pietà , an enthroned Madonna and Child, Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows , Saint Nicholas with the three scholars in a salt barrel, Saint Anthony with a pig and the fire of Anthony at his feet, the saint Mary Magdalene with her ointment vessel, Saint Rochus of Montpellier showing his wounds to an angel, and the Apostle Peter with the key in his hand.
  • Procession poles are housed in two window openings in the nave . On one pole from the 17th century there is a ship with St. Nicholas, on the other St. Eligius , the patron saint of blacksmiths and goldsmiths.
  • The wrought-iron choir grille dates from the 18th century.
