Steinberg is a part of the municipality of Wilhelmsthal in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria .

geography

Steinberg is about four kilometers south of the main town Wilhelmsthal and about six kilometers north of the district town of Kronach . The district extends along the Kronach . The oldest parts of the settlement of the original clustered village can be found on the Schlossberg with a chapel, cemetery and church. Starting from the floodplain, the settlement developed up the less steep slopes. The traffic development takes place in particular through the state road 2200 , which connects Steinberg with Kronach and in the opposite, northern direction, with Wilhelmsthal and further with Tschirn . Steinberg is the seat of the municipal administration of the Wilhelmsthal community.

history

The first mention was in the year 1149. The lords of those "von Steinberc" were probably the first owners of a strategically important castle complex east of the Kronach on a slope at the entrance to the Franconian Forest . The castle church is still preserved from the castle. In 1223 Steinberg fell to the Andechs-Meranien dynasty and in 1248, after the Meranians died out, the Bamberg bishops took over their property. Under their sovereignty, the castle went to noble knights as a castle hat fief. Due to inadequate structural maintenance, the castle fell into disrepair. Only the castle church, first mentioned in a document in 1422, remained. Below the Schlossberg, the original Altort developed at a ford over the Kronach to Hesselbach and Eibenberg. Steinberg, which belonged to the bishopric of Bamberg , passed through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803 together with the remaining areas of the bishopric of Bamberg into the possession of the electorate of Bavaria .

In 1862 the rural community Steinberg was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office of Kronach . It consisted of 15 places, the parish village Steinberg as its capital, the six hamlets bears reason Eichenbühl, Gries, Grümpel, Roßlach and Trebesberg and the eight wastes bug Fehnenschneidmühle, Glasbach, Höpferschneidmühle, Schafhut, sponge mill, stone ditch and stone house mill. In 1871 the main town had 338 inhabitants. The Catholic Church and the Catholic Denominational School were in the village. In 1900 the 885 hectare rural parish had 579 residents, of whom 569 were Catholic, and 101 were residential buildings. The deserted Glasbach, Höpferschneidmühle and Steinhausmühle were no longer run as districts. The main town had 369 inhabitants. In 1925, 735 people lived in the rural community, including 515 people in 79 residential buildings in the parish village. The responsible Protestant parish was in Kronach .

In 1950 the community of Steinberg had 991 inhabitants. The Einöde Schwammenmühle was no longer run as a district, the hamlet of Trebes was new. The parish village had 797 inhabitants with 106 residential buildings. In 1961, 772 people lived in 144 residential buildings in the main town. In 1970 the community had 1,161 and the main town 983 inhabitants. In 1987 Steinberg had 881 residents and 222 residential buildings with 311 apartments. The former municipality before 1975 had 1196 inhabitants.

As part of the regional reform in Bavaria , the municipality of Steinberg was incorporated into Wilhelmsthal on May 1, 1978. Eibenberg on January 1, 1975, Gifting on January 1, 1977 and Roßlach on January 1, 1978 had previously been incorporated into the dissolved municipality of Steinberg .

Old Catholic Parish Church of St. Pankratius

The core of the old church of the parish, which has been independent since 1515, probably dates from the 15th century. It underwent several redesigns and enlargements in the 17th and 18th centuries and extensive renovations from 2000 to 2004. Due to a new church in the 20th century, there were no interventions in the interior of the old church. It is a hall building made of embossed sandstone ashlar, which is spanned by a gable roof with a ridge turret. A fresco painting from the 15th / 16th centuries Century can be seen fragmentarily next to the door to the sacristy . The Gothic beam and plank ceiling dates from the 17th century, the oldest part of the high altar from 1689. The organ was installed in 1893 by the Bayreuth master organ builder Wolf.
