Stephen Quinn (born April 1, 1986 in Dublin ) is an Irish national football player who has played for the Republic of Ireland since 2013 and has been under contract with the English third division club Burton Albion since 2018 .

Club career

Quinn started on the youth team at St Patrick's Athletic . After a league game in 2004, he moved to the youth academy of the English second division club Sheffield United in 2005 , where his brother Alan Quinn had stayed and with whom he temporarily played. In the season in which "The Blades" rose as runner-up in the Premier League , he was not used, but was loaned to the third division Milton Keynes Dons , where he made 15 appearances in the first half of the season. For the second half of the season he was loaned to new league Rotherham United . Both clubs fought relegation, which only Rotherham United could avoid as fifth from bottom. In the second half of the Premier League season 2006/07 he fought with Sheffield against relegation, but could not prevent it. In the following second division season it was enough with Sheffield only to a ninth place. In 2008/2009 they reached the play-offs in third place, but failed in the final in front of over 80,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium at Burnley FC . In 2009/10 they had nothing to do with promotion as eighth, in 2010/11 they were relegated as penultimate. In the third division 2012/13 season , the promotion failed in the playoff semi-finals after they had missed the direct promotion as fifth. But Quinn had already moved to the second division Hull City after three season games and a total of 212 league games for Sheffield , with whom he rose as a runner-up in the Premier League .

In his first Premier League season with "The Tigers" he came to 15 missions and helped that the club escaped relegation as 16th. But more important was reaching the FA Cup final for the first time . On the way there he had achieved the meanwhile 4: 2 in the semifinals at 5: 3 against his old club. In the 2-3 final defeat against Arsenal after extra time, in which he met the future German world champions Per Mertesacker , Mesut Özil and Lukas Podolski , he was substituted at 2-2 after 75 minutes. As a finalist, the club was qualified for the third qualifying round for the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League . "The Tigers" survived this hurdle in which he only sat on the bench once and then met the Belgian cup winner Sporting Lokeren in the play-offs . After a 0-1 win in Belgium, they won the second leg 2-1, but due to the away goals rule, that was not enough to advance. In the league , he scored a goal in 28 games, but also received the red card on December 28, 2014 in the game against Leicester City in the fourth minute of stoppage time , but was only suspended for one game. As third from bottom , he was relegated with the club and then moved to the second division FC Reading free of charge , with whom it reached a place in the lower middle of the table. In the FA Cup 2015/16 he failed with Reading in the quarter-finals at the first division club Crystal Palace , in the League Cup 2015/16, however, already in the second round at the fourth division club Portsmouth .

National team

Quinn played six games in the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008 in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2009 , in which the Irish won only one game and were bottom of the table.

He was only invited to the senior national team more than five years later, but was initially only on the bench against England on May 29, 2013 . Four days later he came on June 2, 2013 in a 4-0 friendly game against Georgia for his first appearance when he came on in the 76th minute. Five days later he was back on the bench in the qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup on June 7, 2013 against the Faroe Islands , but four days later he was substituted on in the friendly against World and European champions Spain in the second half.

Then it took nine months due to torn muscle fibers until his third international match, in which he only sat on the bench once in seven games. On March 1, 2014, he was substituted on for the last ten minutes in the friendly against Serbia . In the next six games he only came on September 3, 2014 in the friendly against Oman for a first 90-minute mission, otherwise he was substituted on or off. Four days later, he played his first competitive game against Georgia in the first qualifying match for the Euro 2016 . In the remaining qualifying games he was only used three times and so could not contribute much to the successful qualification. He only came back to play for the full 90 minutes on November 18, 2014 in a 4-1 win against the USA . Even after successfully qualifying for the European Championship, he was only allowed to play for an hour in one of the two friendlies in March 2016.

On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill in the provisional 35-player squad for the EM . He was then also taken into account for the final squad. His only appearance was in the third group match against Italy, when his substitution in the final minutes helped to make the 1-0 victory perfect. The team reached the round of 16, where it was eliminated by hosts France. In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the European Championship , he only had a brief appearance in the first game against Serbia. After that he was not nominated again.
