Kirkcudbrightshire ( Scottish Gaelic Siorrachd Chille Chuithbeirt ) is one of the traditional counties of Scotland , located in southern Scotland on the border with England . The administrative seat and eponymous place was the city of Kirkcudbright . The county is also called the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright .

Traces of prehistoric times can be found in the Cairn of Park .

As an administrative county, Kirkcudbrightshire existed between 1890 and 1975 and then formed the District Stewartry of the Dumfries and Galloway region . The Dumfries and Galloway region was converted into a Unitary Authority in 1996 . Kirkcudbrightshire is still one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland today .
