Stuart Paul Robbins (born November 2, 1976 in Neath , Wales , † April 12, 2010 in Galway , Ireland ) was a Welsh basketball player . During his career he played most of the time in the German 2nd basketball league for the Braves from Kaiserslautern as well as one season for FC Bayern Munich. After playing in Ireland for the 2009/10 season, the Welsh international died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep at the age of 33.

Career

While studying in the United States , Robbins also tried his hand at American college basketball teams. He was briefly at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia on the Hawks in the NCAA . He also played for the Warriors of Wabash Valley Community College in Mount Carmel, Illinois .

In 1999 Robbins returned to Great Britain and played for the Thames Valley Tigers in the British Basketball League . In the final round of the championship, last year's runner-up failed in the semifinals against defending champions London Towers. In the following season 2000/01 Robbins played in Bree , Belgium , where he also took part in the Korać Cup with the local club with little success when they lost all six preliminary round matches in the first group stage. For the following season he returned to the " island " and played for the London Towers, which had previously gambled away the championship against the Leicester Riders. Nevertheless, the former champion was allowed to take part again with Robbins in the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2001/02 , but where they were even more unsuccessful than in the previous year and lost all fourteen preliminary round games. In the national championship, the Towers were eliminated again in the semi-finals of the final round. In the following season they lost the final of the league cup competition BBL Trophy by just two points, but only reached a midfield position in the championship and were eliminated in the final round in the first round.

2003 Robbins left the island again and moved to the basketball team of 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the second German league group south. Last year's second division climber had only been able to keep the class thanks to the withdrawal of the basketball team from Eintracht Frankfurt , another prominent football club. In the following years, the Lauterer were able to establish themselves in the league and in 2005 and 2006 each achieved fourth place out of sixteen teams in the South Group. In the 2006/07 season they only narrowly failed to get promoted to the basketball league when they were second in the table only one more defeat than the newly promoted POM baskets Jena . Then the basketball team separated from the main club and stepped independently as Kaiserslautern Braves in the newly created ProA , which brought together the sixteen best teams from the previous regional groups in the second division. Here in the ProA 2007/08 , third place was again the best non-promotion position. While the Braves then moved to Homburg , Robbins left the club and moved to another club that was particularly successful in football. The basketball team of FC Bayern Munich had returned to the second division and skipped the ProB by taking over the license from Düsseldorf Magics . In the ProA 2008/09 the climber was able to achieve a secure midfield position.

For the 2009/10 season Robbins left Germany and joined the professional Eagles team at the University of Limerick in the Irish Superleague. He also took on tasks as a trainer assistant and as a trainer for the university team. After a university tournament, he apparently died unexpectedly in his sleep in his hotel room in Galway. There was also great mourning in Germany, so a year later, on the initiative of his former Saar-Palatinate Braves association, a memory game was held in his honor.
