The storm depression Yves , Ana in Western Europe , was a storm that led to an extreme foehn storm in the Alps in mid-December 2017 and to snow chaos in parts of Central Europe .

meteorology

The low Yves / Ana was created on 10/11. December over the Bay of Biscay as an offshoot of a low near the British Isles (Xanthios) and an ingress of polar cold air over the Atlantic. It then moved very quickly on a north-westerly route across the Baltic Sea to northern Scandinavia , where it got lost around the 13th of the month.

Deep Xanthios had already led to heavier snow down to the lower elevations, at the rear of Yves it continued to snow. There was large amounts of snow in the southern damming of the Alps, around 60 cm 10/11. December in Sion , Valais , well above the previous record of 1971. At the front of the low, a strong storm arose, which moved across the Alps as an intense northern foehn . Meteo- Switzerland determined a maximum pressure difference between Lugano and Kloten (south and north of the main Alpine ridge) of 17.5  hPa , the third highest value determined in the last 50 years. As a result, the foehn reaches high hurricane strengths in the lowlands and was in places the most violent storm ever recorded. At the Tauern tunnel north portal at Feuersang (2090 m) near Bad Gastein ( Land Salzburg ), 249 km / h were measured (the value is however controversial), at Piz Martegnas (2670 m) above Savognin ( Graubünden ) 196 km / h the Gütsch ob Andermatt  (2283 m, Uri ) the maximum value was 191 km / h, or 189 km / h on the Aineck near St. Margarethen im Lungau (Salzburg), and 176 km / h on the Patscherkofel near Innsbruck ( Tyrol ) (highest measured value the ZAMG). In the lowlands and the Foehn valleys, the storm in the Swiss Prealps and in the Eastern Alps from the Karawanken to the Graz Basin to the eastern edge of the Alps reached values of 120 to 130 km / h. The temperatures in the valleys reached +15 ° C.

The low was the first to be named in Spanish after the newly introduced naming system of Météo-France (France), AEMET (Spain) and IMPA (Portugal). It is a coincidence that the FU Berlin gave it a name that sounds French.

The storm is part of a series of extraordinary storms from the beginning of October of the year, from storm low Xavier to Ireland hurricane Ophelia , the fast- moving Herwart , the Mediterranean orcan (Medicane) Numa / Attila as well as the Scandinavian hurricane Ylva . They were all caused by a phase of extremely fluctuating and unstable westerly wind drift , strong turbulence on the polar front and a highly active North Atlantic and Arctic oscillation .

consequences

The Austrian districts of Völkermarkt in Lower Carinthia (particularly Rosental and Jauntal ), Deutschlandsberg in West and Leibnitz in South Styria were particularly hard hit by the storm . The civil defense alarm was triggered in the Völkermarkt area on the morning of the 12th , and the emergency services could no longer move out to protect themselves. In Carinthia and Southeast Styria, the armed forces moved out to assist . There was damage to buildings, vehicles, power lines with power outages, traffic obstructions and the closure of roads and railway lines, numerous accidents and strong winds . There was also severe damage in Liechtenstein , Vorarlberg ( Rhine Valley ), Salzburg ( Inner Mountains ), and Lower Austria ( Most and industrial districts ).

In western Switzerland the consequences were limited, in south-eastern Switzerland the snow caused widespread traffic obstructions.
