action

Geologists from the US Geological Survey observe the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park . A new software is supposed to help them to interpret the data and to project the occurrences in the magma chamber . Since the magma chamber is thousands of times larger than that of Mount St. Helens when it erupted in 1980, geologists are certain that an eruption would have devastating consequences.

An earthquake accompanied by a tsunami wave indicates increasing activity of the volcano, but Dr. Rick Liebermann, chief geologist at the park, does not want to give premature information to avoid panic.

The mounting earthquakes and other scenarios suggest that an eruption of Yellowstone could be imminent. Wendy Reiss, Minister of Homeland Security , personally informs herself about the necessary evacuation measures, which should take effect as quickly as possible in the event of an outbreak. Rick Liebermann continues to keep a low profile, but gains the realization that even a relatively small eruption could lead to a destabilization of the magma chamber, which would trigger a super-eruption.

Pressured by politicians, Rick Liebermann finds himself forced to downplay the aftermath of an outbreak in an interview as people begin to prepare for the possibility in order to limit the resulting chaos. Just as he is about to return from Washington, the volcano erupts.

The consequences are devastating, because the super volcano erupts in a super-eruption, as calculated, and numerous others are added to the first exit point, which unite to form a single, huge exit point with a kilometer-long diameter. The second half of the film mainly deals with the consequences of the eruption, in particular with the dangers posed by the volcanic ash released and with the rescue measures initiated by the Minister for Homeland Security, Wendy Reiss.

Rick Liebermann, forced to persevere in a military base, suggests that those in charge ask the people to leave the contaminated areas after the ash rain has ended and to support a Walk to Life . People should be shown a way out of the endangered areas and food should be thrown onto this path from the air in order to survive the disaster.

The FEMA agrees. The super volcanic eruption will be as large as that of Huckleberry Ridge 2.1 million years ago. The whole country is more or less covered by the ash rain. Whole cities have been destroyed. Many millions are dead, but millions have survived thanks to the "Walk to life". Even so, a new ice age has begun across the planet due to the sulfur dioxide and ash that is in the atmosphere, leading to further disasters.

Five years later, Dr. Lieberman Yellowstone one last time. Everything is covered with snow and ice. Humanity survived and he is convinced that the climate and with it the circumstances will improve, as it always happened after such an outbreak. Nonetheless, he also points out, Yellowstone will erupt again, albeit in a distant future.
