Susan Oliver (born February 13, 1932 in New York City as Charlotte Gercke , † May 10, 1990 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American film actress and director and pilot .

Life

Oliver was born as the daughter of the astrologer Ruth Hale Oliver, known in Hollywood, and the newspaper seller George Gercke.

She made her film debut in 1956 in an episode of the television series Studio One . Further offers followed. She was the first female guest actress in the science fiction series Raumschiff Enterprise . In the pilot film The Cage , which was only broadcast later , she was not supposed to turn the head of Captain Kirk with her charm, but of his predecessor Captain Christopher Pike ( Jeffrey Hunter ), which she failed.

She survived a plane crash of her own Piper Comanche in 1966. As a pilot, she won the Powder Puff Derby in 1970. She was to become the first woman to fly from New York to Moscow in a one-person airplane . But the trip ended via Denmark after the Soviet authorities had banned the overflight over the USSR . Oliver published her experiences as a pilot in her memoir Odyssey .

Susan Oliver died of lung cancer at the age of 58 .

Awards

For her final Broadway role in Patate , Susan Oliver won the Theater World Award in 1959 . In 1977 she was nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Neta Snook in the film adaptation of the Life of Amelia Earhart .
