Kedah ( Jawi :قدح, formerly Keda or Queda, pronunciation: [kʰəˈdɑh] ) is a federal state and sultanate in northwestern Malaysia .
State name
In the Middle Ages the state was given the name கடாரம் kadāram by the Tamils . Under Siamese influence it had the Thai name ไทรบุรีSai Buri .
location
Kedah is located on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula on the Andaman Sea . To the north, Kedah borders Thailand and the Malaysian state of Perlis . The offshore island group Langkawi also belongs to Kedah .
history
Iron was cast here even before the birth of Christ. In the early Middle Ages, the area was under the influence of the Hindu South Indian Pallava dynasty , in the 7th century it became part of the Buddhist Srivijaya Empire of Sumatra, usually referred to as Bujang , today it is mainly understood as an excavation area. For a long time, Kedah was a Malay principality that was tributary to Siam .
Great Britain brought the south of the Malay Peninsula under its control at the end of the 19th century. In 1909, Kedah became a British Protectorate and part of the Unfederated Malay States . At the time of the Japanese military administration (from December 1941) it was returned to Thailand in October 1943; a measure that the victorious powers revoked. The area became part of the Malay Union .
In March 2008, the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia received the most votes. She immediately began to implement strict Islamic rules, such as the ban on lipstick and high heels for women in civil service. In August 2008 reggae and pop concerts were banned because the local government feared a negative impact on the youth. The popular dangdut performances were also banned.
Administrative division
Administratively, Kedah is divided into twelve districts. The capital Alor Setar is located in the Kota Setar district .
