TV on the Radio is an American avant-garde and indie rock band from New York City, founded in 2001 . Their music consists of a spectrum from post-punk , jazz to a cappella / doo wop , psychedelia and trip-hop .

Members

The core of the band consists of Tunde Adebimpe ( vocals , loops ), Kyp Malone (vocals, guitars , loops) and David Andrew Sitek (music, guitars, keyboards , loops). At concerts, however, they are accompanied by a whole band. Also on their albums they are often supported by other musicians, such as B. Jaleel Bunton ( drums ), Gerard Smith ( bass ), both official members, Katrina Ford from the group Celebration (vocals), Martin Perna ( flute , alto and baritone saxophone ) from the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Nick Zinner (guitar) from the yeah yeah Yeahs . Gerard Smith was diagnosed with lung cancer while recording the album Nine Types of Light , of the consequences of which he died on April 20, 2011 (shortly after the album was released).

history

The title of their first album OK Calculator was a reference to the Radiohead album OK Computer . Most of this album is very different from their later pieces, which also include electro , hip-hop and turntablism . After that, Kyp Malone joined the band and they released the Young Liars EP and Desperate Youth album , Blood Thirsty Babes , which was very well received by critics. They also received the Shortlist Music Prize for this . Later, a second EP was New Health Rock , which also contained the new track New Health Rock , a cover version of Modern Romance by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Wrong Way, which had previously appeared on Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes .

Other musical activities

Founding member David Andrew Sitek has also produced tracks with other bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Celebration and the Liars .
