The Tarica district is located in the Huaraz Province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on It has an area of ​​117 km². The 2017 census counted 6,959 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4743, in 2007 it was 5394. The district administration is located in the 2802  m high village of Tarica with 1517 inhabitants (as of 2017). Tarica is 14 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Huaraz .

Geographical location

The Tarica district is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Blanca in the extreme northeast of the Huaraz province. The Río Santa flows north along the western district boundary. The peaks Nevado Yanaraju and Nevado Toclla lie on the northern and eastern district boundaries .

The Tarica district is bordered by the Independencia district to the south, the Jangas district to the west, the Yungar and Pariahuanca districts to the northwest (both in the Carhuaz province ), and the San Miguel de Aco district to the north and northeast (also in the Carhuaz Province).
