The Kalmus (original title: Tatarak , German: " Kalmus ") is a Polish feature film from 2009. The film was based on the story of the same name by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz . The world premiere took place during the 59th Berlin International Film Festival on February 13, 2009.
action
The film begins with a monologue by Krystyna Janda about the death of her husband Edward Kłosiński . She is in a barren room with a bed and a chair. Via this monologue, the film changes its perspective on the film set, where Andrzej Wajda and Krystyna Janda read Iwaszkiewicz's story together. The film then flows into the actual story of the doctor's wife Marta, who is examined by her husband. Marta is terminally ill and will not survive the summer. However, her husband and doctor did not inform her of the diagnosis. During a conversation with her friend on the bank of a river, Marta discovers the handsome nature boy Boguś. Boguś is in a relationship with the young Halinka. Marta now regularly meets the not very educated young man, whose naturalness attracts Marta. Boguś drowns at a meeting to swim together in the river. Marta, who had already lost her two sons in the Warsaw Uprising, loses another young person - too soon for a closer relationship to develop. Again the film returns to the private Krystyna Janda. She talks about the anniversary of her husband's death. He died on January 5th, 2008 at 3:10 p.m. In the evening the actress was back on a theater stage. The film ends with the dedication: To Edward Kłosiński.
background
In addition to the story Tatarak by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Wajda originally wanted to film a text by the Polish author Olga Tokarczuk in a second part of the film. During the filming, however, the leading actress Krystyna Janda gave him a text that she had written about the death of her husband. Wajda asked her whether this text was intended only for him privately or whether she would also be willing to speak this text in front of a camera. Krystyna Janda said she was ready for it. For the visual implementation, Wajda was inspired by the pictures of the American painter Edward Hopper .
