Tears of the Sun (original title Tears of the Sun ) is a war film by director Antoine Fuqua from 2003 with Bruce Willis in the lead role, which deals with the turmoil of the Nigerian civil war .

action

In Nigeria during the civil war , the elected president and his family are murdered by insurgent rebels who want to exterminate entire tribes and suppress the entire population in a kind of " ethnic cleansing ". During these troubles, Lieutenant A. K. Waters and his Navy SEALs were assigned a mission in which he met the American doctor Dr. Lena Fiore Kendricks and her staff are supposed to evacuate from their Christian-run refugee camp.

Once there, Dr. Kendricks insisted that the settlement's refugees should also be saved if they join the soldiers. The dutiful lieutenant realizes that he can only fulfill his mission by fulfilling the doctor's request and also taking the local refugees with him. He leads the group to his helicopter pick-up point, but leaves the Africans behind amid violent protests from the doctor. Only when the helicopter flies over Kendrick's mission, which has meanwhile been completely destroyed by the rebels, does Waters decide to turn around and first let the old and weak members of the group be brought to safety. More people cannot be transported with the helicopters and so he marches with his men, Kendricks and the Africans through the jungle to bring them to Cameroon , because the requested evacuation of the remaining refugees is not supported.

Via satellite surveillance he learns that he is being pursued by a hundred rebels, which puzzles him in view of the low value of his mission. It turns out that there is a traitor among the refugees who informed the persecutors of the group's movements, since among the refugees is the last descendant of the presidential family. Now a race against time begins in the direction of a safer Cameroonian border, which in the end is just reached with some losses. On the way they witness an ethnic cleansing in a village. They intervene, but can only save a few villagers. Shortly before the Cameroon border, the pursuers are bombed by two F-18 Hornets . The refugees escape across the border.

Reviews

On the Rotten Tomatoes review page , the film was rated 33% (i.e. only 51 of the 153 evaluated reviews were positive). The verdict there is that the film tries to be meaningful and “highly intellectual”, but in the end it is “just a stylish action film”.

James Berardinelli wrote on movie-reviews.colossus.net that the film was not a “great film”, but “satisfactory”. He compared it to the films Platoon and Full Metal Jacket , which amazed film connoisseurs because, unlike Tears of the Sun , these films take a critical look at the US military.

“An impressively staged, at the same time very tough war film at an aesthetically high level. He is particularly noticeable because his propaganda message that US troops must save the world is all too clearly brought to the fore. "
