action
The not always credible Joey "Ice Cream" tells the story of the four Irish Donnelly brothers in prison from his point of view. They grew up as half-orphans in New York's Hell's Kitchen, which has always been a focal point of conflicts between different population groups, as the Italian mafia murdered the father of the four about a decade ago.
After a few minor crimes, the kidnapping of the bookmaker Louie Downtown, who is related to the Italian mafia, leads to Sean, the youngest of the Donnelly brothers, being beaten to hospital maturity. Jimmy then shoots the kidnapped man. The sensible Tommy then turns to Huey , the head of the Irish Mafia and good friend of the family. He negotiates a deal with the Italian mafia, but secretly Jimmy is said to die. Since Tommy sees through the plan, he and Kevin shoot the traitor and part of the Italian mafia. Through this act, Tommy slips deeper and deeper into a spiral of violence.
The new Irish mafia boss and brother of Huey, Dokey , then searches for his brother's murderer and is not squeamish about it. When Kevin finds Louie Downtown's cell phone, in which all betting transactions are stored, he takes over his betting business with Jimmy and the help of Whitey , an acquaintance of Kevin. In doing so, they quickly run into problems because they cannot collect betting debts that they owe to Bob the Mouth , Whitey's uncle. The two then kill him to forestall him. Jimmy also begins to extort protection money. When Jimmy learns that Whitey has been questioned by the police for the murder of Bob the Mouth, the two of them fight, and Whitey finds it fatal. As Jimmy's business grows, Dokey soon becomes aware of this and the Donnellys begin to involve him.
As the diner Jenny's dad runs is declared dilapidated, Tommy becomes aware of real estate deals in which the Irish Mafia is working with the Italian Mafia. His father was also involved in these real estate deals and so he learns that Dokey is his father's murderer. When Jimmy was humiliated, the Donnellys beat him up. However, since there are too many witnesses, they do not kill him on the spot. Thereupon they want to flee the city as a family for fear of retaliation, but Dokey stops them a few streets away. He asks Tommy who shot Huey, and when Tommy confesses the murder, Dokey shoots Tommy's mother who is sitting in the car. In the following shooting, Dokey also dies. The Donnellys then flee into the night while their mother dies in the car.

background
The series was developed by Paul Haggis together with Robert Moresco . Moresco grew up as one of six sons of a dock worker in Hell's Kitchen and incorporated many childhood experiences into the scripts. The name of the series, filmed in New York, comes from the nickname of the infamous Canadian Donnelly family, which participated in violent disputes in the country in the 19th century. Initially, the title of the series should be "The Truth According To Joey Ice Cream".
While much of the series' reviews have been negative, there have also been some benevolent reviews of the series. Many critics drew the series in comparison to the television series The Sopranos and Brotherhood . The pilot episode of the series was nominated by the Casting Society of America for an Artios Award in the category Best Casting by a Drama Pilot in 2007. In addition, the ninth episode, Death of Art , received an ASC Award nomination for best camera in a television series from the American Society of Cinematographers in 2008 .
