The Congress ( Hebrew : כנס העתידנים) is a Realfilm- / animation hybrid in international production from the year 2013. Written and directed by the very loosely based on the story The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem based film submitted by Ari Folman . The premiere took place at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 ; the film received an award, but was received quite differently by critics and audiences. Robin Wright plays a fictional version of herself in the film: an aging actress who is rarely offered roles. Her son Aaron suffers from Usher Syndrome , which slowly causes him to lose hearing and eyesight. Dylan gives her a drug that she can use to leave the animated world; but he cannot go with her because he only has one portion - the severance payment for twenty years of work at Miramount. He asks her to only remember his animated self and not look at the real self.

In the real world, Robin finds himself between "dreaming", neglected people who wander through ruin-like buildings in a largely neglected world. The still awake people live in large zeppelins that hover over the city. There she finds Dr. Barker again, who tells her that her son could hardly see or hear for a long time, but waited 19 years for her before he switched to the "other side" 6 months ago; Finding him there is as good as impossible. Robin could return to the animated world; but there she would no longer find the world in which she met Dylan again, since every world only exists in her own head. According to Ari Folman, aspects of the film were inspired by Stanisław Lem's science fiction story The Futurological Congress ; so the protagonists in the film as in the book tumble through various stages of illusion. Folman said in an interview:

As a French-German-Belgian-Polish co-production, the animation scenes were created in different studios in different countries; the real scenes were filmed in the United States and Germany. Reviews

The Congress received a largely positive rating from critics of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes in 2017 , but this contrasted with a less positive viewer rating of only 56%. On Imdb, the film received an audience rating of 6.5 out of 10. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, The Congress “ leaves an ambivalent impression.
