action

The very old Roseanne McNulty has been housed in an Irish mental hospital for decades. As the institution building is about to be demolished, the patients are either transferred to other facilities or released into normal life. The external reviewer will be Dr. Stephen Grene made a recommendation on how to proceed in Roseanne's case. Years ago, she recorded her previous life and the circumstances of her admission to psychiatry on the pages of an old Bible. Sebastian Barry's novel The Secret Scripture from 2008 served as a literary model for the film. In 2009 a German translation with the title Ein Verborgenes Leben was published . The novel was inspired by a story Barry's mother once told him about a relative: “We were driving through Sligo and my mother pointed to a hut and told me that my great-uncle's first wife lived there before she was brought in from her family an insane asylum was set up. She couldn't tell me more about her than that she was beautiful. Once I heard my grandfather say about her that she was no good. That was what remained of her and the rumors about her beauty. She remained nameless [...] I felt that as a novelist it was almost my duty to bring her back. ”The novel is closely linked to Barry's earlier work, especially The Whereabouts of Eneas Mcnulty , the eponymous character being a brother-in-law by Roseanne McNulty is.
