Theodor Wilhelm Danzel (born February 4, 1818 in Hamburg , † May 9, 1850 in Leipzig ) was a German aesthetician and literary historian .

Origin and family

Danzel was born the son of the Hamburg doctor Friedrich Danzel (1792–1847) and his wife Anna Catharina Westphalen (1786–1849). His mother was a sister of the lawyer Nicolaus Adolf Westphalen (1793-1854). The surgeon August Danzel (1822–1889) was his brother.

Live and act

Danzel completed his school days at the learned school of the Johanneum and the academic high school in his hometown. From 1837 he studied at the universities of Leipzig , Halle , Berlin and Jena . In 1841 he received his doctorate in philosophy in Jena , then returned to Hamburg and gave lectures on aesthetics at the Academic Gymnasium as well as lectures on Goethe and Schiller . In February 1845 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in Leipzig. In 1848 he joined the German Association in Leipzig. At the age of 32, Danzel, who had had a lung disease from a young age, died of encephalitis on May 9, 1850 in Leipzig and also found his final resting place there.

Danzel was initially a consistent partisan of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel , but was able to emancipate himself from this in 1844 with his work "On the Aesthetics of Hegelian Philosophy". His work " Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , his life and his works" stood in contradiction to the theses of Georg Gottfried Gervinus and was discussed controversially.
