Philipp Theodor von Gosen (born January 10, 1873 in Augsburg , † January 30, 1943 in Breslau ) was a German sculptor and medalist .

Life

Theodor von Gosen from Augsburg studied from 1892 to 1899 with Wilhelm von Rümann at the Art Academy in Munich and then worked as a freelance sculptor. Here he made friends with the sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand , under whose influence he moved away from the pathos typical of the early years. His comfortably seated Heinrich Heine is probably a result of this influence. During this time, Gosen mainly designed decorative small bronzes and pieces of jewelry and since 1897 has exhibited his works regularly in the Munich Glass Palace and at the exhibitions of the Berlin Secession . He joined the same year by Bernhard Pankok , Bruno Paul and Richard Riemerschmid based movement to promote and renovation of arts and crafts on.

In 1905 he was appointed to the Breslau Art and Trade School by Hans Poelzig . As a professor in Wroclaw , he headed the workshops for bronze foundry as well as chasing and driving work , was increasingly active in the field of large-scale sculpture and created various monuments and architectural sculptures for Wroclaw, among others. Contemporary sources praise his work above all for the "stylish and material-appropriate naturalism, which is particularly concise in his portrait busts" and the brilliant technical execution. As an early member of the German Association of Artists , Theodor von Gosen participated in the first exhibition , which took place in the Royal Art Exhibition Building in Munich in 1904, with a trophy and a bronze portrait relief. In 1908 he was elected chairman of the newly founded Artists' Union of Silesia ; a position he held until 1932.
