Theodor Heinrich Rochus von Rochow called von Briest (born April 21, 1794 in Jeserig near Brandenburg an der Havel , † April 20, 1854 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and envoy in Saint Petersburg.

Theodor was a son of the Prussian Prime Lieutenant in the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps Friedrich Ehrenreich Adolf Ludolf von Rochow (1770-1799) and his wife Karoline Philippine , born von Briest (1773-1831). His father was canon of Minden and Lord of Jeserig and Neuhaus. His brother Gustav Adolf Rochus became the Prussian interior and state minister. His sister Klara (1796-1865) was married to Lieutenant General Friedrich Heinrich Ludwig von Pfuel .

Career

Rochow received his upbringing together with his brother in the grandfather's house. In 1809 he came to the Academie Militaire and on April 24, 1810, after having passed his exams, he was employed as a second lieutenant in the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps of the Prussian Army . During the Wars of Liberation he took part in the Battle of Großgörschen , was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and promoted to Prime Lieutenant on May 19, 1813. Rochow was awarded the Order of Saint Anne III for his conduct near Leipzig . Class. During the summer campaign , on June 1, 1815, he was transferred as adjutant to the 1st Guards Cavalry Brigade, where he was promoted to Rittmeister in the same month . As such, Rochow was transferred to the adjutantage on October 3, 1815 and served as the second adjutant of the inspection of the Guards Cavalry. In this position he became major at the beginning of April 1820 and came on November 9, 1820 as second adjutant to Prince Wilhelm of Prussia , the brother of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. On March 29, 1821 he was aggregated to the adjutantage . He was awarded the Order of St. John on October 22, 1829 and the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class, on November 23, 1834 .

With his promotion to lieutenant colonel Rochow was appointed envoy in Switzerland on April 6, 1835 and in May 1835 was aggregated to the regiment of the Gardes du Corps while remaining in this position. On March 30, 1837, he became a colonel and also envoy to the Württemberg court. In 1839 he gave up his duties in Switzerland, but remained as ambassador in Stuttgart. In 1840 Rochow received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion . On 22 March 1843, it was character as Major General lent and on 1 August 1845, he came as Prussian ambassador to the Russian court to Saint Petersburg. There he received on May 8, 1849 the character of Lieutenant General and on May 6, 1851 the patent for his rank. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves and the Alexander Nevsky Order . Rochow died while exercising his service on April 20, 1854 in Saint Petersburg.

He was the heir to Jeserig, Neuhaus, Nennhausen and Bamme. With the death of his maternal grandfather Philipp Friedrich Wilhelm August von Briest (1749-1822), he received on April 20, 1816 permission to use the name von Rochow called von Briest. But since he remained without male descendants, the name Briest finally died out with him.

On November 2, 1817, Rochow married Mathilde Elisabeth Countess von Wartensleben (1797-1884) in Karow . The couple had several children:
