Theseus, Held von Hellas (original title: Teseo contro il Minotauro ) is an Italian mythological adventure film that was directed by Silvio Amadio . The title role was played by the decathlete Bob Mathias . In the German-speaking area, the film was shown for the first time on Christmas day 1960.

action

Phaedra, the daughter of the Cretan King Minos, orders her lover Chirone to track down and kill her twin sister Ariadne, who lives in a village. Theseus and Demetrius, who save Ariadne, do not escape the attack on the village. Then Chirone orders the family of Demetrius, who live in Crete, to be sacrificed to the Minotaur. The two heroes go to Crete; there they are captured by Phaedra, although she has fallen in love with Theseus.

Demetrius and his family die, Theseus escapes injured and falls into the sea. He is saved by the goddess Amfitrite and sent back with a sword. He learns that Chirone's people have kidnapped Ariadne and placed in the tombs of Phaedra, whereupon he can penetrate there, defeat the guards and defeat the monster Minotaur. Phaedra flees and is attacked by her own animals while the revolting people kill their ally Chirone.

criticism

The Monthly Film Bulletin regretted: "A potentially interesting myth that has once again been turned into a mechanically running average Italian spectacle, [...] with unnaturally cramped love scenes and sloppy editing." Similar to the lexicon of international films : "Cheap" antique film "with supposedly spectacular accents on horror and cruelty, more than freely based on the Greek Theseus legend. "

Italian critics particularly criticized the cast of the main actor, who "has no facial expression and leaves no impression"

Remarks

The film grossed 460 million lire in Italy .

Mario Bonnard is often incorrectly named as the director. Giorgio Capitani was director of the 2nd staff.
