Tom Turbo (formerly Tom Turbo Detective Club ) is the name of an Austrian children's television series. The main actor is Tom Turbo , a fictional wonder bike with 111 tricks. The show was invented by the children's book author Thomas Brezina , who is also an actor himself.
Television series
In 1993, ORF started the interactive television crime series for children, The Hot Track . The audience can slip into the role of the detective and "solve the case" by putting the letters together with the correct solutions to form a code word . In the first five episodes, viewers didn't have to write down letters, but numbers in order to call the secret phone number. Books and other prizes are raffled off among those who send the code word. In addition, all winners will receive a detective certificate.
The cast list includes actress Lotte Ledl , former ski racer Fritz Strobl and entertainer Mat Schuh .
In 2001 the series was renamed Tom Turbo . In addition, Thomas's detective office, which used to be in a high-rise building, was relocated to an underground room in Schönbrunn Zoo . In 2008 there were further innovations: The title was changed to Tom Turbo Detective Club and at the end of each episode there are detective tips and archive material from previous years is shown. In addition, the appearance of the detective agency has changed twice since then. In 2016 the series was renamed "Tom Turbo" again. Now there are no detective tips and no archive, but a slightly changed theme song.
Production and broadcast
The series is produced by the Viennese company Tower10 KidsTV GmbH (formerly KidsTV GmbH ) on behalf of ORF. Until 2001, different young actors were selected for each episode. In 2001 the first casting for child actors, who are allowed to play for about 2 years, took place. Six children were selected from over 300. The first actors to be identified using the new system were: Aurelia Berger, Olivia Marei , Katharina Fröhlich, Helmut Sauer, Elias Kilgus and Stefan Vettinger. Since then, new children have been selected for the children's roles at a casting about every two years. In 2007 , Jakob Feyferlik , who later became a soloist of the Vienna State Ballet , could be seen in three episodes as a 10-year-old.
With over 500 episodes, Tom Turbo is one of the longest-running series in the Confetti TiVi or okidoki . The 300th episode ( Mozart episode) was broadcast on November 19, 2005. From episode 301 there are also new child actors. From 2005 to 2007 the Austrian composer Hannes Bertolini was responsible for the film music for the series.
In 1994, shortly after the start of the series, a special was broadcast with the name The hot trail to the hot trail , in which information was given about the background of the series and some sets were shown.
2003 episodes from the years 1999 to 2001 were repeated under the title The hot track - summer special. In the summer of 2009, 60 old episodes were broadcast again under the title Tom on a hot track . In summer 2010 these 60 episodes were shown again. Nickelodeon Germany (Nick until March 30, 2010) broadcast this series from 2005 to 2007. Since September 2010, an old episode of The Hot Track and Tom Turbo has been broadcast every Sunday under the title Tom on the Hot Track due to fan demand . For this purpose, the film material, which is more than ten years old, was converted into the 16: 9 image format that is common today. On Sundays, a sequence of wishes can often be chosen. New episodes and reruns of Tom Turbo Detective Club are broadcast weekly on Saturdays.
The high television consumption of children of elementary school age influences the children and their socialization , advice programs like Tom Turbo make the children pay attention.
Advertising integration
The Schönbrunn Zoo was regularly used as a film location and at the same time was a product placement for the “children” target group . In the course of this, Helmut Pechlaner, the zoo director at the time, also appeared in the series in a father role. The zoo uses the series as part of its customer orientation for its customer experience management .
Other locations were Schönbrunn Palace , Grafenegg Palace , the Styrassic Park ( Bad Gleichenberg ), the Herberstein Zoo , the Vienna Prater , the Laxenburg Palace Park and Podersdorf am Neusiedler See .

Books
The television series is based on the book series of the same name by Thomas Brezina, which was started in 1993. Tom Turbo supports two children, Karo (Karolin Klicker) and Klaro (Konstantin Klicker) in the fight against the "eternal evil" Fritz Fantom . There is also a kind of gimmick in the books that thematically matches the content. Karo and Klaro always use this gimmick in the content. The Tom Turbo single volumes are no longer available from the publisher, an anthology with the best adventures was re-published in summer 2005.
Characteristics and ancestry
In the book Tom Turbo is assembled by the siblings Karo and Klaro. They received the building material from their parents, who always wanted the latest technology in their home and threw the outdated equipment away. Karo and Klaro built Tom Turbo from this “ garbage ”. In the television series, the wonder bike is created from the ideas of Thomas.
Tom Turbo has "111 turbo-mad tricks", for example he can make himself very small, transform himself into an animal, prepare ice cream , bake pizza , reach things with his gripper, fly and more. Karo and Klaro are in contact with him through a kind of bicycle bell clock. In the series, Tom is connected to Thomas Brezina through a video radio contact. He addresses the children and Thomas as "Boss" and uses the you-form. His battery can be charged from the detective's office (with the turbo power jet). Tom Turbo prefers to drink lubricating oil and hates water (danger of rust) and climbing stairs. A frequent location of the stories is the junkyard, to which Tom Turbo is lured by his opponents for the purpose of destruction. Another danger for him is that his battery will run out quickly. He doesn't like it when he's called a “ bike ”.
Motion picture
In 2013, the movie Tom Turbo - From 0 to 111 was produced, which tries to connect the series with the books.
Who is haunted in the black castle? (1996): Anti-Semitic Stereotypes
Vertlib analyzed Who is haunted in the black castle? (1996):
- “The illustrations for this children's book are formally linked to patterns of anti-Semitic agitation by the 'striker'. In the drawings as well as in the text, stereotypical banal representations and representations of evil, simple clichés are used. B .: Doctor Spinntus is a 'gray-haired man whose face is reminiscent of a bird of prey,' as it says in the text. In addition, he has a hooked nose, large ears, a greedy and lustful look, sharp teeth, a sly smile, curled, dark hair; he has a hump and a short neck. "
- "The attributes of Dr. Spinntus have been part of the hate speech and prejudice repertoire of anti-Semitism and racism since the 19th century "(Vertlib 1996, p. 10)
Gero Fischer found:
- "Worse than the text are the illustrations by Robert Rottensteiner, who implements the pattern according to which the (bad) character can be read off the body structure and posture, equating 'ugly' with 'bad character', as if he were directly from 'Striker' templates. [...] Apart from the extremely simple and sometimes embarrassing course of action and the rather modest language, the combination of image and text lays the trail for a negative image of man that must be seen from the historical context of racism and anti-Semitism. The fact that this work has not yet aroused any public discussion shows how high the threshold of sensitivity is currently, or how great the 'tolerance' is towards racist and anti-Semitic modes of representation and content. Whether or not copywriters and illustrators are aware of their racist expressions or not is a question in itself, but what is most relevant is that they (re) produce racist and anti-Semitic images and content and are responsible for them. "
