The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2005 consisted of a 67.5 kilometer team time trial from Tours via Amboise to Blois . Until the 2nd intermediate time in Onzain , the route led along the Loire , then it moved away from the river and led through slightly hilly terrain.
The race was won by Lance Armstrong's crew, Discovery Channel . However, the CSC team (with overall leader David Zabriskie ) was ahead in all intermediate times. Zabriskie fell on the penultimate kilometer. His teammates drove on without him, however, so as not to jeopardize Ivan Basso's chances of winning overall. After all, the CSC team was two seconds short of the stage win.
If Zabriskie had only crashed on the last kilometer, only those two seconds would have been credited to him, but in the end he lost over a minute, which is why Lance Armstrong received the yellow jersey .
Discovery Channel achieved the highest average speed in a team time trial in the history of the Tour de France. The team covered the distance in 1:10:39 hours, which corresponds to an average of 57.31 km / h. The previous record was set at the 1995 Tour de France by the Gewiss-Ballan team (54.930 km / h).

1 The time is then stopped when the fifth driver of a team crosses the finish line. However, a team can lose a maximum of three minutes on the winning team. The team - and thus also every driver in the individual classification who crosses the finish line with his team - is credited with the real time. However, if the real backlog exceeds the maximum possible backlog, only the maximum backlog is taken into account. Drivers who are left behind and who do not finish at the same time with their team will be credited with the time actually driven.
