The prologue of the Tour de France 2010 was an 8.9 km long individual time trial and took place on July 3, 2010 in Rotterdam , the Netherlands . It was the first prologue since 2007. The profile was almost completely flat and had two very small climbs on the Erasmus Bridge and the Willems Bridge .

The Spaniard Xavier Florencio was suspended from his Cervélo TestTeam a few hours before the start of the race . According to the team management, he had used an ointment with prohibited ingredients. No athletes were nominated, so Carlos Sastre's team started the Tour de France with eight instead of nine drivers.

The estimated investment volume for hosting the tour start was between 10 and 12 million euros. The expected income was between 35 and 40 million euros.

Race course

Iban Mayoz was the first driver to drive over the ramp at 4:15 p.m. Tony Martin from the HTC-Columbia team, who started eleventh, led the ranking for a long time. Only time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara , who started from the penultimate rider, was able to undercut Martin's best time. The Swiss from Team Saxo Bank completed the route in exactly 10 minutes. Cancellara was able to repeat its success of the previous year and be the first to take over the yellow jersey. Overall, it was the fourth victory for him in an opening time trial of the Tour de France. Martin received the white jersey for the best young driver.

Lance Armstrong was the fastest of the favorites for the overall standings and finished fourth, 22 seconds behind. Favorite and last year's winner Alberto Contador , who took to the track at 7:32 p.m., lost five seconds on Armstrong.

It rained during the middle part of the race. Only towards the end did the rain stop and the course almost completely dried out.

Both the Swiss Mathias Frank from the BMC Racing Team and the Portuguese Manuel António Cardoso from Footon-Servetto fell during the course of the race. Frank suffered a fracture in his right thumb and a muscle tear in his thigh, and Cardoso was admitted to a clinic with a double broken jaw. Neither driver started the first stage on the following day.
