The 15th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 19 led over 187.5 km from Pamiers to Bagnères-de-Luchon . On this mountain stage there were two sprint classifications and four mountain classifications, one of the hors category, two of the 2nd category and one of the 4th category. As on the previous day, 175 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

After the drivers had driven through a three-kilometer neutral zone, the real start took place at 12:23 p.m. Pawel Brutt was the first to attack after a three-kilometer smooth ride, but was caught again shortly afterwards. Johan Vansummeren and Jérôme Pineau were the next attackers, but these drivers were also recaptured one after the other. It was no different for a group around Anthony Charteau . One after the other, a group of five and one of seven drivers attacked, but they were also brought back. The field tore apart by the high speed, with Andy Schleck , Robert Gesink and Charteau in the rear group. The Saxo Bank team brought the two groups back together. In the climb to the first mountain classification, a group of ten, in which Thor Hushovd and Alessandro Petacchi were. Pierrick Fédrigo won the mountain classification ahead of these two. After that, however, this group was caught up again by the field. The sprint teams controlled the speed on the way to the first sprint classification, which was 47.5 km / h in the first hour of the race. However, the leaders of the sprint classification missed out, as Jeremy Hunt , Damien Monier and Pineau shared the points among themselves. Then a group around Petacchi and Charteau was able to break up briefly before they were caught up again. Martin Elmiger was the next to attack, but who was caught again as well as the group of four who followed him. Nicolas Vogondy was the next attacker. He was followed by a group that gradually grew to 32 drivers. However, this group was too large to be left off the field and was recaptured. Brian Vandborg and Luke Roberts then pulled away and were followed by eight other drivers. These were Vansummeren, Sergei Iwanow , Lloyd Mondory , Alessandro Ballan , Francesco Reda , Thomas Voeckler , Sébastien Turgot and Aitor Pérez . This group eventually let the field run by Saxo Bank and Omega Pharma-Lotto go. Meanwhile , Mauro Santambrogio gave up the tour.

Voeckler won the mountain classifications on the Col de Portet-d'Aspet and the Col de Ares, while the group's lead on the Ares was almost ten minutes. Turgot was the first to cross the second sprint classification. Before the Port de Balès , the group reached its largest lead of almost eleven minutes. Iban Mayoz , Anthony Geslin and Brett Lancaster crashed in the field at the beginning of the climb, but all three riders were able to continue despite injuries. Saxo Bank and Astana went back to pace in the field. On the climb to Port de Balès, some riders in the leading group had to tear down, so that initially only Iwanow, Vansummeren, Voeckler, Vandborg, Ballan and Pérez remained. This was followed by an attack by Voeckler, in the vicinity of which only Vansummeren and Ballan remained. Shortly afterwards, Vansummeren could no longer follow Ballan either. In the meantime, Voeckler expanded his lead over his pursuers.

Other drivers also fell behind in the field. Among them was Nicolas Roche , who lost the connection due to a defect. However, his team-mate John Gadret , who was worse positioned in the overall standings, refused to help his captain and drove on. Schleck attacked his rivals, and a group of the top five in the overall standings formed. At this point in time, the first outliers were caught again. Schleck's group slowed down again and the chasing group was able to reconnect. John Gadret then attacked twice and was able to break away on the second attempt. Schleck then attacked again, pursued by Alexander Vinokurow . The chain jumped off the wheel when he switched and Vinokourov slowed down again in response. At this point, Alberto Contador attacked , who drove forward together with Denis Menschow and Samuel Sánchez . Despite Schleck's chain problem, the group carried out their attack and took the opportunity to take Schleck's time. Meanwhile Voeckler also won the last mountain classification, displacing Schleck from third place in the mountain classification. He was followed by Pérez and Ballan. At the summit, the group around Contador also caught up with Roberts, who secured the last ten mountain points before Sánchez. Schleck, who had lost about 40 seconds due to the defect, fought his way back to the front and overtook several drivers in pursuit. By the time he reached the summit, he was able to reduce his gap to around 20 seconds. On the descent he worked with Jurgen Van Den Broeck , but didn't get any closer to Contador, Sánchez and Menshov. Vinokurov caught up with the duo on the descent.

Voeckler reached the finish line first and won the stage. 1:20 minutes later, Ballan and Pérez followed, who made up the next places among themselves. The group around Contador, which had caught up with other riders from the former breakaway group on the descent, reached the finish just three minutes after Voeckler. Mondory won the sprint for fourth place ahead of Roberts. Schleck's group was 39 seconds behind the Contador group at the finish. Schleck had lost the fight for the yellow jersey against the new overall leader Contador by eight seconds. He could only defend his white jersey. The way in which Contador had taken the lead in the overall standings sparked criticism. Contador replied that he hadn't noticed Schleck's defect. Nicolas Roche reached the goal about five minutes behind the group around Contador and thus lost his chance of a place in the top ten in the overall standings. He was annoyed by Gadret's refusal to help.
