The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 20 led over 199.5 kilometers from Bagnères-de-Luchon to Pau . On this mountain stage there were two sprint classifications and four mountain classifications, two of which were in the Hors Catégorie and two in the 1st category. With the Col du Tourmalet , the highest point of this year's Tour de France was reached for the first time at 2,115 meters. The winner of this mountain classification received the special prize Souvenir Jacques Goddet . After Mauro Santambrogio , Bram Tankink and Iban Mayoz had given up , 172 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

At 11:43 a.m., the riders reached the real start on the ascent to Col de Peyresourde after 3.7 kilometers of neutral driving . David Zabriskie and Rémy Di Gregorio were the first to attack. Among the drivers who followed them was Lance Armstrong . The Astana team formed at the head of the field, while Ivan Basso and Thomas Voeckler , among others, had to let go. The breakaway group grew to 17 riders, among them Bradley Wiggins , Roman Kreuziger , Christopher Horner , Sylwester Szmyd and Ryder Hesjedal . Five drivers later dropped out of the top group and Sandy Casar was able to follow suit , so that the group then consisted of 13 drivers. Jérôme Pineau and Cadel Evans meanwhile had to let go in the field. Anthony Charteau , Carlos Sastre and Alexander Vinokurow and two other drivers caught up with the leading group, but other drivers fell back. Szmyd was the first to cross the summit, followed by Charteau and Kreuziger. In the descent, the now 14-strong group increased their narrow lead on the field to around 50 seconds. They were followed by Jurgen Van Den Broeck , who was also trying to catch up with the group and was 20 seconds ahead of the field at the summit. However, he failed with his project and was overtaken by the field again. After the quick initial phase, this comprised only about 30 drivers, but later increased again. The Rabobank team helped to narrow the gap to the top group again before the second climb.

Szmyd led the breakaway group on the climb to Col d'Aspin . Against him, Juan Manuel Gárate brought Alberto Contador's group back to less than 20 seconds. Many drivers fell out of this again and in the meantime it consisted of only 14 drivers. Damiano Cunego attacked from within this group. The top group also shrunk to ten drivers. Charteau was now the first to cross the summit, followed by Casar and Kreuziger, 30 seconds behind the Contador group also reached the highest point. Cunego caught up with the now 12-strong top group. Meanwhile, Casar pulled away from the leading group in the descent. The group of favorites led by Omega Pharma-Lotto grew again and was able to close the gap to the Armstrong group. Shortly afterwards Pierrick attacked Fédrigo . Armstrong pursued him alongside another driver and passed him.

In the meantime, Casar was the first to climb the Col du Tourmalet by himself until Armstrong caught up with him. Behind these two, a chasing group consisting of Jurgen Van De Walle , Fédrigo, Christophe Moreau and Cunego formed. At the front, Armstrong attacked his companion, who was overtaken by the pursuers. Then Cunego and Fédrigo could break away from the chasing group and catch up with Armstrong. Shortly afterwards, the other drivers also caught up with Armstrong, creating a top group of six. Christopher Horner , Rubén Plaza and Carlos Barredo also made it into the top group, which now consisted of nine drivers. Ignatas Konovalova's Anthony Charteau was between the leading group and the field . Konovalovas was able to join the leading group, which now had a lead of well over three minutes. Thor Hushovd attacked in the field , but could not catch up with the leading group and shortly afterwards he was caught by the field again. At the summit, Moreau attacked and was the first to cross the mountain classification, followed by Fédrigo, Cunego and Armstrong. In front of the field, Charteau was still more than two minutes behind the leaders. Finally he let the field overtake him again.

During the descent, the leading group was able to extend the lead to more than six minutes with which the group started the climb to the Col d'Aubisque . Further up the climb, Barredo attacked the group, Fédrigo followed suit, Armstrong, Cunego and Plaza followed them. From this group of five, Barredo attacked again, followed by Fédrigo and Plaza. But Armstrong and Cunego also made it again. The quintet reached the Col de Soulor with a lead of over nine minutes. Meanwhile, the five pursuers split into two groups. The first chasing group from Horner, Van de Walle and Moreau were able to reconnect with the leading group, which Casar and Konovalovas did not manage. Before the mountain classification of the Col d'Aubisque, Moreau pulled in, followed by Fédrigo and Horner. The larger group of favorites also reached the summit, 9:45 minutes behind.

Casar was able to catch up with the leading group in the descent. Barredo attacked again and was the first to reach the first sprint classification. He was able to pull out a lead of over 45 seconds at times over the Armstrong group and also won the second sprint classification, each time ahead of Moreau in the chasing group. In the meantime, Omega Pharma-Lotto and Rabobank made the pace work in the field. Konovalovas dropped back into the field. At the head of the race, the chasing group led by Plaza and Horner put the leading Barredo, who was in the lead as a soloist for over 40 kilometers, and finally only 1,000 meters from the finish. Moreau and Armstrong put on the sprint, but had no chance against the stronger sprinters in the group. Fédrigo won the stage in front of Casar and Plaza. Almost seven minutes later, the field also reached the goal. The sprint of the field for tenth place won Hushovd, who was one of only a few sprinters in the group of favorites. So he fought back the green jersey.

Jens Voigt had a serious crash on the descent of the Col de Peyresourde at 80 kilometers per hour because of a burst front tire. The situation was similar to that on the 16th stage a year earlier , when he also had a bad fall and had to stop the tour. Voigt was combative and this time continued his ride despite several bruises and abrasions. Since his team's support vehicles were further ahead and his bike was no longer operational, he had to cover 15 kilometers with a youth bike from the neutral material wagon before he received a new racing machine. Then he caught up with the group, with which he reached the goal. Voigt continued the tour.
