The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 11th led over 189 km from the station des Rousses to the mountain arrival in Morzine - Avoriaz . On this mountain stage there were three sprint classifications as well as two mountain classifications of the 4th, one mountain classification of the 3rd and two of the 1st category. After Stijn Vandenbergh had exceeded the time limit the day before, 186 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

The real start took place at 12:40 p.m. after 3.6 kilometers of neutralized drive. As on the day before, there were immediate attacks, including again by Dimitri Champion and Christophe Moreau , but all were repulsed. Also Vasil Kiryienka , Jérémy Roy and Rein Taaramäe could not settle. After about six kilometers, several drivers fell due to an inattention on the part of Fabio Felline . Among them were Cadel Evans , Jérôme Pineau and Simon Gerrans , but everyone was able to continue. Felline, like Pineau and Evans, had to be treated by the racing doctor. As it turned out only a day later, Evans broke his elbow. Shortly afterwards, Lance Armstrong also fell. Taaramäe, who was again in a breakaway group, won the first mountain classification of the day before he was caught up too. The field tore apart by the high speed.

Finally, a group of seven was formed, which included Mario Aerts , Benoît Vaugrenard , Christophe Riblon , Imanol Erviti , Sébastien Minard , Amaël Moinard and Koos Moerenhout . This group was let out of the field, even if the Quick Step team made sure that the gap was not too great. In the breakaway group, Riblon won the second mountain classification and Aerts the first sprint classification. In the field, Johannes Fröhlinger fell on a traffic island, but this had no major consequences for him. The septet at the top now had a maximum lead of about seven minutes. Moerenhout won the second sprint classification. Shortly thereafter, Armstrong fell for the second time in the field.

On the ascent to Col de la Ramaz, the first mountain in category 1, Cadel Evans and the Sky Professional Cycling Team drove into the front of the field at high speed, which quickly formed a group. At the top, Moerenhout left his previous companions, only Aerts and Moinard could follow him. In the meantime, more and more drivers fell behind in the field, including the yellow jersey wearer Sylvain Chavanel and Pineau, and finally Armstrong. At the front of the field, the Astana team now picked up the pace after being led by the Saxo Bank team in the meantime . Aerts was the first to drive over the mountain, followed by his two companions and two minutes before the next group. When Armstrong reached the mountain classification, he was briefly stopped again when two drivers from Euskaltel-Euskadi got caught while picking up food bags and fell. Right at the front after the descent, Aerts also won the smaller mountain classification before the final ascent, Moerenhout won the last sprint.

In the final climb, Aerts and Moinard accelerated at the top, thus breaking away from Moerenhout. In the favorite group, Joaquim Rodríguez attacked , who, like Aerts, was overtaken by the group around Contador, only Moinard remained in front. Meanwhile, Andreas Klöden and Ryder Hesjedal also had to let go as the pace in the group was kept up by Daniel Navarro . The group of favorites got smaller and smaller, and the high speed eventually overtook Moinard. Bradley Wiggins also fell back from the top group . Roman Kreuziger attacked two kilometers from the finish but gave up his attack when his team captain Ivan Basso could no longer follow. When Robert Gesink attacked , Michael Rogers could no longer follow either. Andy Schleck finally attacked one kilometer from the finish , only Samuel Sánchez was able to follow. This pulled on the finish sprint, but Schleck pulled past and secured the day's victory. Cadel Evans , who finished in the group of favorites, took over the yellow jersey. Chavanel and Armstrong crossed the finish line well over eleven minutes behind. For the American, all chances of the overall standings and his eighth tour victory were destroyed.
