The 1st stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 4th led over 223.5 km from Rotterdam to Brussels , making it the second longest stage of the Tour de France. There were three sprint classifications on the flat stage. After Mathias Franks and Manuel António Cardoso gave up due to fall injuries, 195 of the 198 registered participants started.
Race course
After driving a few kilometers through Rotterdam, the drivers stopped at the Erasmus Bridge for an opening ceremony of the 97th tour with the city's mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb . The real start was given at 12:22 p.m.
Only two minutes later, a trio consisting of the Dutchman Lars Boom , the Spaniard Alan Pérez and the Belgian Maarten Wijnants pulled away from the peloton, increased their gap to over seven minutes at times and made up the sprint scores among themselves. Especially the teams of favorites for the targeted mass sprint increased the pace later in the race, which is why the lead then shrank again. They led the peloton nine kilometers from the finish line to the last runaways who had fought for the lead over the previous 20 kilometers with the Moldovan Aleksandr Pliuşkin, who was open to them . Contrary to the fears, the wind did not cause any problems on the journey over the dams.
After the Australian Adam Hansen fell and left the race with a broken sternum and several drivers, including David Millar and Ivan Basso , were involved in an accident with a dog, several mass falls occurred over the last kilometers of the 1st stage: In the On the last corner, Mark Cavendish , one of the favorites for the day's victory, lost his driving line and caused a crash in which sprinter Óscar Freire, among others , fell.
Another mass crash occurred on the home straight, in which overall leader Fabian Cancellara was also involved. Around 30 riders who were in front of the center at the time of the crash contested the battle for the day's victory. Tyler Farrar was knocked to the ground 200 meters from the finish line . In the final sprint, the Italian Alessandro Petacchi prevailed ahead of Mark Renshaw . Since the falls occurred within the last three kilometers, the time of the day's winner Petacchi was credited to everyone involved, so that Cancellara defended the overall lead. Petacchi took over the green jersey.
