The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 8th led over 187.5 km from Épernay to Montargis . On this flat stage there were three sprint classifications and two mountain classifications in the 4th category. After Amets Txurruka gave up due to fall injuries the day before, 188 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

After almost 10 kilometers of neutralized drive, the official start took place at 12:53 p.m. After a few minutes, Julien El-Farès , Jurgen Van De Walle and José Iván Gutiérrez attacked and quickly pulled away. With just under eight minutes, the group achieved the largest lead of a breakaway group so far in the 2010 Tour. Van De Walle was the first to cross the two mountain classifications. Gutiérrez was the first to drive over the sprint classification in between, which, however, was not a sprint.

At the head of the field, the HTC-Columbia team set the pace, supported at times by Kanstanzin Siuzou and Stuart O'Grady , and so the lead became smaller again. With up to 35 ° C it was pretty hot on this stage. Van De Walle, meanwhile, did most of the work in the leading trio. El-Farès won the second sprint classification. Now the pace of this stage, which was initially a bit leisurely, increased. About 6.5 kilometers from the finish, Gutiérrez, who had previously won the last sprint classification, attacked from the leading trio and was able to pull away briefly. Four kilometers from the finish, however, he too, like his two former companions, was taken off the field.

The Garmin-Transitions team pulled on the finish sprint, which was ultimately won by Mark Cavendish , who was able to prevail against Gerald Ciolek and Edvald Boasson Hagen . It was the Briton's first stage win on this tour and the eleventh overall. Thor Hushovd was able to extend his lead in the points classification with a good fifth place. As on the day before, nothing changed in the other ratings.
