The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 16 led over 210.5 kilometers from Bourg-de-Péage to Mende . On this mountainous stage there were two sprint classifications and five mountain classifications, two in the 2nd category and three in the 3rd category. After Mark Renshaw had been excluded and Samuel Dumoulin had given up , 177 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

After driving almost seven kilometers through the neutral zone, the real start was reached at 12:05 p.m. Fabian Wegmann tried to pull away from the start, but was not left out of the field. The same thing happened to Lars Boom after five kilometers. Due to the high speed of the field, further breakaway attempts failed. The field was torn into two parts, the second part of which included Lance Armstrong and Andreas Klöden . In the first group there were still about 20 drivers, including Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck .

Ryder Hesjedal , Pierrick Fédrigo and Rui Costa were later able to pull away from the field. They were followed by two other drivers who were recaptured. There was a fall in the field in which Geraint Thomas and Jérôme Pineau , among others , were involved. Fédrigo was the first to cross the first mountain classification, while Rein Taaramäe took the last point in the field . After the mountain classification, the other two drivers were caught again after Hesjedal, when the RadioShack team worked the pace while Armstrong and Klöden were back at the front of the field. After 42 kilometers, a new group of three formed from Sylvain Chavanel , Benoît Vaugrenard and Damiano Cunego , which was put back a few kilometers later. Sandy Casar was also unable to break away before the second mountain classification. Then, shortly before the mountain classification, a group of 18 broke away from the field, with Anthony Charteau being the first to drive over the hilltop. Due to the high speed, over 49 kilometers were covered in the first hour of the race.

The breakaway group, which included Alexander Vinokurow and Andreas Klöden , was now able to pull away and was able to pull out a lead of over two minutes. In the first sprint classification, Petacchi's team mate Grega Bole was able to prevail against Thor Hushovd , who was also in the group . Sandy Casar won the third mountain classification before Charteau. The teams Saxo Bank and Lampre did the work in the field and temporarily reduced the lead of the breakaway group to less than two minutes. Charteau was the first to cross the fourth mountain classification and thus also fought back for Pineau's dotted jersey . He also attracted the sprint for Hushovd in the second sprint classification, which he was able to win before Bole. As a result, Hushovd fought back the green jersey, as there would be no sprint finish on this stage due to a steep mountain before the finish. Like Christophe Kern , Hushovd then dropped back into the field. At the front, Vinokurow increased the pace, a group of three formed with Wassil Kiryjenka and Ryder Hesjedal , followed by Andreas Klöden, who was able to join the group. This group was able to briefly increase their lead over the field to around four minutes, after which it shrank again as several teams picked up the pace. Meanwhile, Tyler Farrar left the tour. The now twelve-person chase group was put in a short time later.

After the group of four at the top first reached the ascent to the final mountain classification in Mende, the field followed just under a minute later. There Cunego tried to pull away, but couldn't. John Gadret was the next attacker, but he was caught again. In the top group, Hesjedal and then Klöden could no longer follow. Meanwhile, Armstrong fell out of the field. Vinokurov took the lead from Kiryenka. Joaquim Rodríguez attacked in the field , followed by Jurgen Van Den Broeck . Thereupon Alberto Contador attacked, whom Andy Schleck could no longer follow. Contador was able to overtake Winokurow together with Rodríguez after leaving Klöden and Kiryjenka behind. Contador was the first to cross the mountain classification. His companion Rodríguez won the final sprint and secured the day's victory. Andy Schleck lost ten seconds to his toughest competitor for the tour victory.
