With the Tourmalet, the highest point of this year's Tour de France was reached again at 2115 meters. The winner of this mountain classification received the special souvenir Henri Desgrange prize . As in the previous stage, 172 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

At 12:30 p.m., after a 6.8 km drive through the neutral zone, the drivers reached the zero kilometer mark. Again, some drivers immediately tried to leave, including Tony Martin , but initially no one was left out. Kristijan Koren made another attempt to break away. He was followed by the six drivers Juan Antonio Flecha , Edvald Boasson Hagen , Alexander Kolobnew , Marcus Burghardt , Rémi Pauriol and Rubén Pérez . The field let the group go and in the first mountain classification, which Kolobnew won, the septet was already more than three minutes ahead. There, José Iván Gutiérrez , Daniel Lloyd and Stéphane Augé tried to break away from the field . The trio was captured again by the speed work of the RadioShack team . After that, Astana took control again. Meanwhile, Simon Špilak left the tour. Ignatas Konovalovas tried a new attack. Samuel Sánchez had a hard crash in the field, but was able to get back on his bike. The field slowed down and Sánchez was pushed back to the front by his team. Meanwhile, Carlos Sastre drove up to Konovalovas.

Boasson Hagen won the first sprint classification. The group's lead increased further and grew to over nine minutes before the second mountain classification, the Col de Marie-Blanque . In the chasing duo, which were still more than three minutes behind the leaders, Sastre left his companion behind on the climb, who later fell back into the field. Sastre was now on his own and initially couldn't get any closer to the leading group. In the field, the first drivers lost touch. In the top group, Flecha won the mountain classification ahead of Koren and Pauriol. Sastre still secured the last five points and had reduced his deficit on the summit to 1:20 minutes. The field also narrowed the gap again, in which Omega Pharma-Lotto and the Saxo Bank team took the lead. In the flat passage before the next pass, Sastre lost ground again compared to the leading group. His gap widened to over four minutes and the field moved closer to him again.

On the climb to the Col du Soulor , Astana did the pace work again. The riders who opened up again in the flat fell back from the main field and formed the group. Now Jaroslaw Popowytsch and Sylwester Szmyd , among others, could no longer keep up with the pace. Sastre made up time on the top group on the climb. There Burghardt led first, then Kolobnew increased the pace, which initially Pauriol, but then the others followed. In front of the field, a herd of sheep crossed the road, which meant that it had to slow down for a short time, but nobody was harmed. The mountain classification won in the top group Burghardt ahead of Koren and Pérez. Less than three minutes later, Sastre reached the mountain classification and again scored the last five points. Around one and a half minutes later, the field led by Stuart O'Grady followed, which lost some time on the descent due to the moderate speed on the wet road. In the flat passage Boasson Hagen also won the second sprint classification of the day. The backlog of Sastre grew steadily again in the flat section, before the final ascent he was overtaken by this after almost 120 kilometers alone between the top group and the field.

Almost four minutes before the field, the leading group led by Boasson Hagen reached the ascent to the Col du Tourmalet . The field started the climb with Astana in the lead. In the meantime, the Rabobank team also took part in the management work, while Sastre lost touch. At the front, some drivers gradually lost touch and a duo of Kolobnew and Burghardt formed. Fabian Cancellara took the lead in the field. Christophe Moreau fell back, whereby Anthony Charteau finally secured the dotted jersey , as no more mountain points were awarded after this stage. When Chris Anker Sørensen took over the pace work in the field, Cadel Evans and Ivan Basso also fell behind. Kolobnew and Burghardt continued to lead, while the field gradually collected their former companions. Kolobnew separated himself from Burghardt in the front and was now on his own. The field was getting smaller and smaller, and Alexander Vinokurov , too , let go. Jakob Fuglsang increased the pace and the favorite group continued to shrink. Carlos Barredo attacked about ten kilometers from the finish . Andy Schleck followed suit and only Alberto Contador could follow him. Behind them was Joaquim Rodríguez . Schleck continued to pace, but could not shake Contador off his rear wheel. The duo finally overtook Kolobnew, who had been in the lead up to that point. Their lead quickly grew to over a minute over the group of other ranking drivers, led by Robert Gesink . Contador attacked Schleck briefly, but he could not shake off his competitor either. Schleck took the lead again and crossed the finish line first in front of Contador, who did not intervene in the sprint to win the stage. In the chasing group, Joaquim Rodríguez pulled away from his companions and crossed the finish line 1:18 minutes behind in third. The fifth placed Samuel Sánchez was eight seconds behind Denis Menschow . Lance Armstrong finished 17th, 4:12 minutes behind.
