The 7th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 8th led over 218 kilometers from Le Mans to Châteauroux . There was a sprint classification on the flat stage, but no mountain classification. As on the previous day, 194 of the 198 registered drivers started.
Race course
Yannick Talabardon made a successful escape attempt shortly after takeoff. Mickaël Delage and Gianni Meersman followed him, shortly afterwards also Pablo Urtasun . The lead of the quartet increased quickly at first, then more slowly to over eight minutes, until the Garmin-Cervélo team , supported by the HTC-Highroad team , was able to reduce the lead again at an overall low race pace. Meanwhile, Tom Boonen gave up the tour due to a fall injury in the 5th stage. Later, at increased speed, there were again falls, which led to the abandonment of Bradley Wiggins and Rémi Pauriol . Christopher Horner was also injured by a fall, but was still able to continue the race; Tyler Farrar was merely held up.
Mickael Delage won the intermediate sprint from the top group, while Mark Cavendish prevailed against José Joaquín Rojas in the field . The main field, which had been reduced by the falls, caught up with the breakaway a few kilometers from the finish. The HTC team started the sprint for Cavendish, who won its second stage in this Tour de France and prevailed against Alessandro Petacchi and André Greipel , who was also attacking .
