Tour de l'Abitibi

The Tour de l'Abitibi is a junior stage race in cycling in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region , Québec , Canada .

The race was first held in 1969. Since 2009 it has been an international competition as part of the UCI Men Juniors Nations' Cup and is currently the only race for juniors in North America that is supported by the UCI World Cycling Federation ( as of 2020 ). Numerous later successful cyclists such as Steve Bauer , Laurent Jalabert , Bobby Julich and Andrew Hampsten took part in the tour before starting their professional career.

Since the year 2000, one stage of the tour of the Cité de l'Or museum mine has been about 91 meters (300 feet) below the surface of the earth. Racers must drive through the tunnels and the access ramp (17 percent incline) before reaching the roads of Val-d'Or .
