action

Ovi Mahajan Jr., the son of India's biggest drug lord Ovi Mahajan Sr., was kidnapped by his Bangladeshi competitor Amir Asif. He is being held captive in Dhaka . Saju, Ovi's right-hand man, is instructed to fetch him back. Knowing that the cartel did not have enough money, he nevertheless hired a mercenary force led by former member of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment Tyler Rake. He travels to Dhaka and manages to get hold of the boy.

But Saju tries to prevent the "Extraction" in order to bring the boy home himself. And so Tyler and his team face two enemies: Saju and the captors of Asif. The surrender on a ship is prevented and so Tyler and Ovi hide in the city that has been cordoned off by the cartel. But Tyler can't trust anyone, even a friend betrays him. Ovi kills the traitor, he is visibly shocked by what he did.

A new handover location is agreed, but to reach it, the two have to cross a kilometer-long bridge. So that they can do this, they are now working with Saju. In the big showdown, Saju is first killed by a sniper. Then Tyler tries to take the boy to the other side with Nik Khan, one of the survivors of his team. He is apparently fatally hit and falls into the river. Nik brings the boy back to Mumbai , India.

Eight months later, Nik kills Asif in a men's room in a luxury restaurant. Ovi jumps off a swimming pool threesome and when he emerges he sees the silhouette of a man who could be Tyler.

background

The film was made in collaboration with various people who also worked on the Marvel Cinematic Universe . Sun plays Thor actor Chris Hemsworth not only the title role, but produced the film together with the two Avengers: Endgame -Produzenten Anthony and Joe Russo . The latter also wrote the script. The director was again Sam Hargrave , who was responsible for the special effects for some of the MCU titles.

The film is based on the comic book Ciudad by Ande Parks, Fernando León Gonzalez, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo from 2014. Some parts of the story were rewritten. The kidnapped youngster in the original is a girl and in the original the city, as the title suggests, was Ciudad del Este in Paraguay . The film is implemented extremely brutally.

The film became the number one most viewed content on Netflix shortly after its release. Shortly after the film was released, there was speculation about a sequel. The speculation was also fueled by Sam Hargrave, who, however, still leaves open whether it could be a sequel or a prequel.

reception

Tyler Rake: Extraction received mixed reviews. In particular, the missing story was criticized, which actually only consists of a series of fight scenes. Dennis Vetter from the taz summed up: “The film shows attention to detail in its massive choreography. Otherwise there can be no talk of subtlety, which has long been part of action cinema. So little happens mentally and narrative that the film can certainly use the currently stagnant cinema to find its audience: a bitter Australian mercenary named Tyler Rake saves an Indian boy from Bangladesh and gets caught between the fronts. "

Björn Becher from Filmstarts , on the other hand, praised the action sequences and awarded 3 out of five stars: "The running time, which is inflated to almost two hours - unnecessarily - makes for one or the other hangover, but it is always followed by damn strong action scenes."

Paul Tassi of Forbes contrast, described the film as well and puts him on a par with similar titles such as the John Wick - and the Bourne film series.
