US Cup 1992
The 1992 US Cup was an invitation tournament for national soccer teams organized by the Football Association of the United States of America . It was the first edition of this series of tournaments, which continued until 2000, and took place from May 30th to June 7th, 1992. Besides the host team , participants were Italy , Ireland and Portugal . After six games in “everyone against everyone” mode , the United States was surprisingly the first winner.

USA - Ireland 3-1
In the opening game, the hosts beat the Irish team 3-1. The game was closer than the result would suggest. After a goalless first half, Ireland took the 51st-minute lead through Mick McCarthy, but only three minutes later the US leveled with a Marcelo Balboa free-kick. With goals from Tab Ramos in the 70th and John Harkes in the 87th minute, the Americans secured victory.

The USA celebrated their second victory in front of just over 10,000 spectators at Chicago's Soldier Field . The only goal was scored by Roy Wegerle in the 35th minute when, after a long pass from Bruce Murray, he broke through in the middle and slipped over the Portuguese goalkeeper Adelino Barros with his left foot.

In the fourth game Italy took a 1-0 lead against Ireland in the 17th minute with a goal from Giuseppe Signori. In the second half, Alessandro Costacurta increased the goal in the 56th minute to 2-0 with a converted penalty . The Irish lost their goalkeeper in the 64th minute when they were sent off.

The Italians took the lead in the second minute through Roberto Baggio. John Harkes was able to equalize for the USA with his second tournament goal in the 23rd minute. It stayed at this level until the end, so that the host could secure the tournament victory.
