The USS Helena (SSN-725) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the Los Angeles-class submarine . The name of the boat is the city of Helena in Montana .

history

The Helena was commissioned by Electric Boat in 1982 and laid down there in 1985. The construction of the boat took 15 months, after which the final equipment and first tests followed. In July 1987 the Helena could officially be put into service with the United States Navy .

From May 11, 1989, the Helena had to be towed home from Midway , Pearl Harbor , Hawaii, because the gearbox of her single shaft was defective and the screw could no longer drive. The ship spent the first few years testing cruise missiles and torpedoes.

The year 2005 the Helena spent in the western Pacific and visited the ports of Sasebo and Yokosuka (both Japan), Singapore , Guam ( Apra Harbor ) and Saipan . Together with the combat group around the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) , the ship also took part in exercises.

At the beginning of 2008, the Helena went on a journey to the western Pacific for six months, and in 2009 she took part in the ICEX exercise under the Arctic polar cap. From the end of 2011, the submarine sailed for six months in Central and South American waters.
