The USS Springfield (SSN-761) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It was named after the two cities of Springfield in Illinois and Massachusetts .
history
SSN-761 was commissioned in 1986. Construction took place at Electric Boat , the keel was laid on January 29, 1990. After two years in dry dock and a further year of finishing at the pier, the Springfield was officially put into service in early 1993.
By 2004, the Springfield moved for a total of six six-month missions in the Atlantic and European waters. An overhaul and modernization was started in the middle of the year. This also took place in the EB shipyard. In 2008, the boat moved to the Mediterranean Sea to escort the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) .
