Udo Albert Thilo von Westernhagen (born August 21, 1833 in Schönebeck (Elbe) , † February 22, 1886 in Deutz ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 15th Cavalry Brigade .

Life

Udo was a son of the Prussian Colonel and Lord on Bleckenrode Ernst Ludwig von Westernhagen (1797-1865) and his wife Albertine Eleonore, née Kramer (1802-1848).

Military career

After visiting the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin , Westernhagen was transferred as a second lieutenant to the 5th Uhlan Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 26, 1852 . He served as a regimental adjutant from October 1852 to June 1853, was assigned to the military riding school in Schwedt / Oder from October 1, 1855 to August 30, 1857 , and was promoted to prime lieutenant . On May 31, 1859, he was promoted to Rittmeister and was appointed chief of the 2nd Squadron. During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Westernhagen was leader of the mobile 2nd squadron of his regiment in 1859 and was commanded from 26 August 1859 to 16 May 1860 as a department commander to the train battalion of the VII Army Corps . On April 12, 1864 he took over the 4th squadron of his regiment and in 1866 was leader of the regiment's replacement squadron during the war against Austria .

Westernhagen rose to major on June 18, 1869 and took part in the battles at Colombey and Noisseville at the beginning of the war against France . During the siege of Metz on September 6, 1870, he was employed as a regular staff officer in the Schleswig-Holstein Uhlan Regiment No. 15 and took part in the battles near Orleans , Le Mans , Bazoches-les-Gallerandes , Nouan , Saint Amand and Savigny , Vancé , Chassillé and Laval. From September 13 to December 21, 1870 he was also the leader of the regiment and received the Iron Cross and the Mecklenburg Military Merit Cross, 2nd class , for his work .

With a position à la suite , Westernhagen was commissioned on January 22, 1874 to lead the 2nd Rhenish Hussar Regiment No. 9 and on February 17, 1874 he was appointed regimental commander. Westernhagen married on July 10, 1862 in Teistungenburg Sophie Felber (1840-1929), a daughter of the bailiff and owner of Teistungenburg Gustav Wilhelm Felber. The couple had several children:
