Spiel mit dem Feuer is a German television film by Judith Kennel from 2012. It is the seventh episode of the crime series Under Other Circumstances with Natalia Wörner in the lead role.

action

This time Commissioner Jana Winter is dealing with an unusual murder. Henner Ullmann, employee of the Schleswig youth welfare office, is found dead in a smokehouse. Susanne Ullmann reports threatening letters that her husband had received. A first suspicion falls on Achim Kaminski, an alcohol-dependent father whose son was placed in a home on Ullmann's initiative. Kaminski denies having anything to do with the threatening letters. The head of the youth welfare office confirms, however, that Ullmann felt threatened by Kaminski. Commissioner Winter finds another mother who was in conflict with Ullmann and had problems with him. Since separating from her husband, Kathrin Teding has been involved in a custody dispute, in which the youth welfare office is also involved.

During the first investigation of the crime scene, the investigators found out that Ullmann had set up an SM room on his property . After fingerprints of at least eight different people were found there, his wife was also included in the group of suspects. When asked, she said that their relationship had cooled down and that she had come to terms with his "hobby".

A note leads back to the victim's professional environment. Ullmann should be transferred to Flensburg, which draws the investigators' attention. They find out that Frauke Jespersen, the wife of the youth welfare office head, had an affair with Ullmann and was one of his private SM friends until recently. Because of his increasingly extreme inclination, she had ended the relationship with him and her husband applied for a transfer.

Jana Winter discovered the real culprit by chance when she discovered the same font on a delivery note that was used to write the threatening letters to Ullmann. That leads to Kathrin Teding, who admits to the commissioner that she was blackmailed by Ullmann. Since she suffers from an anxiety disorder and is often under the influence of pills, he threatened her with withdrawing the children if she did not take part in his SM games. She agreed to it until she could no longer bear it and on the evening of the crime had fought against her tormentor with a baton. Assuming he was dead, she hid him in his own smokehouse.

Reviews

Rainer Tittelbach from Tittelbach.tv wrote: “The script does not sound out this topic [of S / M practices] more deeply, but places the gender struggle subplots -“ randomly ”- next to one another. This dramaturgy, which may fit a conceptual drama, works in a TV crime thriller that suggests everyday life and psychologically remains on the surface, artificial and constructed. "Conclusion:" Staging remains flat & no scene is remembered. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm rated it positively and wrote: "Very confidently staged network of sexual obsessions and (emotional) addictions." "Abyssal, bizarre and deeply human."

Tilmann P. Gangloff wrote for Kino.de : “Even the last Schleswig thriller with Natalia Wörner as detective superintendent Jana Winter ('Mord im Watt') was strongly Scandinavian in all its gloom and depth. 'Playing with Fire' also dares to venture into lowlands, which are unusual for the main evening. […] The film, like the entire series by Judith Kennel, does not play the subject of sadomasochism speculatively in the foreground with a noticeable effort to create its own signature. But naturally it keeps cropping up. "
